As a folow up to my previous response, I have today emailed the Scottish Commissioner for FOI and requested his assistance in giving those of us living in a Devolved Scotland the same Freedom rights as those living in other parts of the UK.

Again many thanks for your previous response; coupled with the article in the BBC's Magazine on the War years information, it gave me the kick I needed to try and do something rather than just accepting the dictate from the powers that be.

I hope you are right but I am told that the FOI Act does not cover the 1911 Census in Scotland - however, I will endeavour to ascertain if your info. is correct.

If so, I wonder if the Reidtrar General will change his decision not to publish if he ends up getting thousands of emails from all round the world? :-)

The 100 year rule was made in 1841 - times change and new Governments have to change with them or just like the Dinosaur they will fade away.

The release of this Census during the year of the Homecoming could have benefited Scotland greatly by attracting Genealogist from overseas - up until now Scotland has been in the lead with release of this type of information - it will be a great pity if we allow others to overtake us.

I am pretty certain that the people who gave the census information would be more than happy to see their ancestors interested in their life and happy to see the country benefiting from their research.

People do not trawl through hundreds of pages of entries out of idle curiosity, apart from the fact that it is meaningless unless you are related to the individuals concerned, it is far too expensive.

Visitors living outwith the UK not only pay for the information, they also visit the area where their kin live and spend money locally - many of them are elderly and might not be in good health etc. by the time the information is released, so the ability to make a visit is lost - there is a big market out there and we should be exploiting it for all we are worth.

Seems like excellent news but it might have been even better if they had released the 1911 Census as our English cousins did. Seems the English have a better Freedom of Information Act than we have.

I did email to the Minister in charge but he was happy to let the General Register's Office in Edinburgh make the decision to hold it back till 2011 and didn't want to comment.

So here we are with 1911 released for England, Wales and even Ireland, who have put it on-line for free, but Scots and the descendants of Scots living abroad have to wait and wait and wait.

Lots of commonsense suggestions here - I would welcome Joint Administration but with a return to true local councils to deal with locl issues - the current Councils are far too big and remote with many Local Councillors being forced into deals resented by local people.

Unfortunately, this will result in job losses, but the situation has got out of control and people like myself, who are charged an arm & a leg in local taxation, are sick fed up to the teeth with politicians who pretend to believe the situation is fair, where the rich are protected with the tax being capped and many pay nothing towards the tax at all, despite earning far more than most pensioners.

The SNP's proposals whilst not perfect, (it should all be part of national income tax), will continue to earn votes but they should have struck a deal with the Lib Dems over this issue and fine tuned the actual charges later when they got a majority. Better half a loaf than no bread at all.

Sorry but I think you will lose Craig - he needs to move up a level.

My father always told us it was because every Highlander carried a dirk at his belt - similar explanation :-)

I got my manners them from my father - he was a real stickler for proper behaviour - I still give up my seat to women on the train if necessary, although the last 10 years or so I have got some funny looks from the feminist brigade.

One of my friends who I travelled with on the train used to say 'you are going to get a sore face one day' but it never happened - unlike some of those on this blog, everyone I encountered on my train journeys accepted they were in the wrong and desisted - perhaps it was because of the dirk at my waist :-)

More's the pity - I am fortunate in that neither my daughter nor her husband uses such language in the house, therefor my grandsons will not be brought up to see it as the norm.

If I had been present at the time I might have - I used to pull kids up on the train for using foul language in the presence of women and the women in question were always grateful for my intervention.

Of course standards have changed for the worse over the years and language that was once kept for the pub, when telling jokes has becoome the norm for some people.

A number of years back, another soon to be retired guy and myself were sitting in a room with three women, two young and one older, when my male colleague turned to me and said 'Are you hearing the language these girls are using?'

I wouldn't want any of these women to be bringing up my grandkids.

I still maintain that foul and abusive attacks do nothing to win the debate and merely demeans the user, not the person attacked.

The bloggers here are entitled to their opinions as I am to mine - depends on the kind of world you want to live in. It's your choice.

Not sure that either is a crime in the strict sense of the word as they would be covered by civil law rather than criminal law but again perhaps you know best.
