Nope. The collective noun for sheep is flock. So you'd use 'What was the flock told' or 'What were the flock told'. Both are correct. Sheep is just the plural of sheep. Staff is a collective noun as it refers to a collection of people.

And yes, the ambiguity of the pluralisation of collective nouns is a lot more interesting than another story about Spinvox.

Staff is one of those ambiguous collective nouns that can be either singular or plural. Staff as a single unit is singular. Staff as each member of that unit is plural. Therefore was and were are both right.

iPlayer: BBC v BT 12:57pm on 02 Jun 2009 I've just been to the BT website and although, yes, they do say that Option 1 is UP TO 8 meg, so are Options 2, 3 and Anywhere. Therefore, anyone comparing the packages would only see a difference in the total cap and other extras such as the ip phone and bundled anti-virus software. Thre is no mention of the speed throttling in the comparison table.

If you click for further info on Option 1 it states that amongst other things this is 25 hours of iPlayer. Although the sums are right (25 hours of iPlayer per month at 896kbps is about 9.6 GB total), in reality you would need a faster service to watch it at that quality given that the iPlayer needs to buffer large chunks quite regularly. And also BT have no right to moan to the BBC given that BT are using the iPlayer as a marketing tool for Option 1. BT have acted completely dishonsetly in this respect.

Network storage still not consumer-friendly 8:20pm on 09 Apr 2009 I have a NAS (a QNAP) connected to my network and accessed by my macbook, and find it works best when connected via SMB. Once connected, you can add the server to your mac account's login items so that it connects at startup. I don't know for certain, but I would assume the Iomega can do the same.

Agreed though, although I love my NAS, I have found that to get the most out of it I have had to login through ssh and add some tweaks via shell scripts, perl scripts, crontabs and compiling my own binaries from source. As a programmer by trade I enjoy doing this sort of geekery, but most people won't.

For most people looking to make simple backups then an external USB is the best way to go as long as they remember to backup regularly.

Every other tech website and blog has been awash with Apple news this week, and for the BBC to not report it would be a failure to provide its public service.

The fact is that Apple make products that people want. One can argue until the cows come home whether they're the best, or the most innovative, or give value for money, or are the most shiny, or whatever, but at the end of the day the sales figures speak for themselves.
