Entertaining tax changes 4:09pm on 27 Oct 2008 Two things Brian’s and others comments prompt me to say-

Although Council Tax feels like a vast sum for those of us who pay it, it still makes up a surprisingly tiny percentage of council funds. So even though it makes us feel warm and fuzzy that a Local Authority actually is somehow accountable to us, Council tax isn’t (wasn’t) really a good way to judge your local authority.

Secondly, speaking as a recent graduate, if a student is working 21 hours a week and over the tax paying threshold, why shouldn’t they realistically pay tax? Why are you a student if you are working that many hours? I worked all through university, but you shouldn’t ever put work before your studies. Or if you are lucky to have a well paying job, why should you be exempt when you can afford to pay, no one else is.
Bean counting on a political scale 4:20pm on 10 Oct 2008 Unionists only thrive when they can do Scotland down. It really is pathetic. You would think from Unionists glee that UK was completely unaffected by this storm and that Scotland has weathered well under the shield. Totally out of touch. Well the coming months will show just how well Scotland is protected by the Union. I’m glad it’s only the tiny independent countries, like say America, Germany and Japan that are suffering the financial crash.

Tavish's tactical tax tester 4:37pm on 15 Sep 2008 I think this is a tactical disaster. Announcing this on a weekend where if anyone is talking about anything politicall it's the internal assault on Brown.

From now on at FMQs if Tavish asks for anything and extra funding for a project etc, Salmond will just slap him down with 'well that's all well and good, but you are the man who wanted to take £800 million from the Scottish Budget with your proposals, Lie down before you hurt yourself Tavish'
And now, time for the news 9:17pm on 08 Sep 2008 "parochialism is a turn-off, a one-dimensional idea of Scottishness is not attractive"

Oh yes when I used lived in Estonia, no one watched ETV news or anything from Tallinn, they much preferred to know what Moscow's view of the situation was! If anything is parochial and one-dimensional it's you my friend, Anaxim.

The government has begun considering plans to replace Britain's nuclear weapon system, Trident, which is nearing the end of its lifetime. If the government goes ahead with the plans, nuclear weapons would be based in Scotland for the next 50 years. The cost of replacing Trident is estimated by the government to be around £20 billion, with running costs estimated by others to take the amount spent in total to around £50 billion over the lifetime of the new weapons system. Duly elected 07:17am on 25 Jul 2008 I don't find the 'not a vote for independence' rant unconvincing- It was by Curran's own choosing to bring this by-election into scottish constitutional territory. Her first words after her selection were ' Councillor Mason came into politics for one reasoon, and one reason only- to break up the UK' Well Maggie, by your own words you put him on that platform- he's only in it for one reason, according to you, and yet it seems your very own scottish parliamentary constituents agree with him.

The people of Scotland are so adverse to independence they just voted for a 'hard line nationalist' over a devout unionist, the best candidate Labour could have hoped for. Spin your way out of that one Unionists. Your era is over.

Cllr Mason was one of the few councillors to win over 50% of the vote last year, won a council by-election in the area within the constituency already and has been re-elected for a number of elections ever since. He must be doing something right.
