Victory follows arm-twisting and cajoling 11:25am on 12 Jun 2008 The next General Election has to be held before 3 June 2010, as laid down in the Parliament Acts.

That is exactly in the next 104 weeks.

I have excluded the summer months and the Christmas periods to further reduce this to a possible 58 Thursdays.

There are 14 possible Thursdays in 2008.
There are 18 possible Thursdays before the summer of 2009.
There are 11 possible Thursdays after the summer of 2009.
There are 15 possible Thursdays in 2010.

The election will not happen in 2008, which means Gordon’s choice is further reduced. If we then completely ignore the month of November in 2009 and two Easters, then this leaves 30 possible Thursdays before the next General Election.

Further refinements could easily halve that number.

“both sides need to be a little modest” as the presidential campaign between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama comes to an end.
“Obama has scored what amounts to a win on points,” Cost writes. “He did not score a knockout.”
He later adds:
The Obama campaign had a better understanding of the system. It found the possibilities and made the most of them. What’s more, the Clinton campaign let it do this. Simply put, Obama out-maneuvered Clinton. Clinton supporters need to respect this.
Meanwhile, Obama supporters need to recognize that their candidate is the victor not because he put together a majority coalition, but because he out-maneuvered Clinton. This was a highly intelligent strategy, but it was not a grand feat of majority building. Obama supporters need to recognize that their candidate won not because “the people had their say,” but because his campaign out-smarted her campaign. Accordingly, they need to respect the candidate whom they could not beat in a straight-up fight for votes.

He got a lot of help from the Clintons themselves, perceived first as ganging up on him, then he just let that ol’ Clinton dysfunction implode all by itself. The rest is sniper fire.

The stage managed meetings might look good on TV but only for the followers of that party. Any party meeting that results in people like Wolfgang ? being thrown out for heckling are an insult to ordinary voters.

My late father said the best speaker he ever heard was Hugh Gaitskill and he was badly heckled, but stood his ground and used the hecklers to push his points across.

We need more open meetings and more open access to politicians - lets forget security for a moment - and this might mean a re-engagement with politics and end the current disenchantment

I do agree with your points, particularly#3.

From here in the UK, it will be his foreign policy that matters. Not just Iraq, but trade, energy shortages, food shortages in the Third World, Zimbabwe etc.

What we need is some one who will lead and say this is wrong, this has to be changed etc.

I am not yet sure that Obama has got that extra something.

A GE in 2010 with GB as the PM will be what the conservatives most want. They will campaign on how little he has been successful coupled with his broken promises. Think 10p tax, extra fuel duty, no referendum on Lisbon etc.

A referendum in Scotland could well produce a majority vote for separation such is the (political) loathing of all things English at the moment. That coupled with the disarray of the Labour pary in Scotland could well mean far less Scots Labour MPs, thus helping "Dave" to be the next PM.

GB's only hope is go long and not call the GE in 2010 hoping that the economic cycle has improved, helped by a giveaway Budget in April 2010. An improvement in the security situation would help, but 42 days imprisonment without being charged will not help that particular situation.
Olympic overspend no surprise 1:01pm on 24 Apr 2008 What about those in the north of England or even Scotland. Why should they have to pay for this or even the regeneration of parts of London.
Letter to America 11:09am on 18 Apr 2008 Kennedyesque, Gordon Brown isn't. This trip seems like a complete waste of time and money. We no longer have a real influence on American foreign policy. we are just the puppet to the puppet mater.

Hopefully the voters at the local elections will tell Brown what they think of him and his government.

In another comment you said that none of the candidates were strong. What do you mean?
