Census question questions 5:57pm on 27 Oct 2009 The fact that this has been tested and approved by this particular body does not make it an appropriate question to ask.

There is no need for the state to know this much detail about our lives.

Whether or not it was at the behest of ministers is neither here nor there - it is about the limits of the state.

The UKSA should limit itself to things that are really vital - not trying to monitor every little nook and cranny of our one great land.

At some point, the state must accept it cannot - and should not - know everything.

First thoughts 5:15pm on 25 Aug 2009 Brown's problem is that he is known to have paved the way for the Scottish decision. His government made it clear that there was no legal obstacle to a release.

By doing that, it is clear to most that his government has given tacit consent to release a man who has been found guilty of blowing a plane out of the sky, killing 270 people - 41 of whom were UK citizens.

He cannot condemn the decision to release - as his government is implicated in the process

He can just offer weasel words about the reception back in Tripoli.

A disorganised panic 11:36am on 06 May 2009 This posting started out fine - but then you start spouting a line provided by the Labour Party. This is not the level of journalism I would expect from a BBC Editor - however it is what I have come to expect from you Nick.

Labour is not in a mess because of the nuances between a positive spin and a negative one on the economy. It is because they have lied over the true mess they created. It is because they have become the most authoritarian government in modern political history. It is because they put party politics ahead of the national interest.

Examine their record, expose their failings - that is what we need from you Nick - not just rehashing press releases from Mandy.
Air thick with talk of a reshuffle 11:13am on 06 May 2009 You are spot on with your analysis here. Sending Blears to the back benches would make her the focus of every revolt going - an ideal partner for Charles Clarke to work with to continue to undermine Brown.

If Brown does choose to demote/remove 2 prominent female Cabinet members, he needs to show that he isn't a misogynist and bring in new people. But who? There isn't anyone who is good enough - most of them will be wanting to spend time trying to cling on to their seats.

Back to the future 4:22pm on 01 Oct 2008 This speech was nothing as simplistic as this 'analysis' would make it appear.

It was thoughtful - and moving. The section about the NHS brought me to tears (for very personal reasons).

It is about setting a tone and indicating very clearly an ability to lead us.

The OBR policy is a policy that should be examined in a cool and collected way - not tacked on at the end of a lightweight piece with no relevance to modern politics.
