England get luck of the draw 11:03pm on 04 Dec 2009 It seems strange that it takes an Italian coach to give us our best chance in a long time by instilling the basics of discipline and belief but I think if he had the squad say 2-4 years back we would have had a much better chance.

The defence is now a worry, the attack lacks a fox in the box type (Lineker say) and the left side of midfield is less than perfect. While to be hoping James can stay free of injury and dodgy judgement is not where you have to be to win this.

In short a world class keeper, three reliable center backs and a left footed/quality midfielder (Giggs say) are things we are all short of, we will make the last 16, possibly the semis, even our Italian leader can't work miracles beyond there - luck possibly can...
Where now for Everton? 5:43pm on 26 Nov 2009 I live in Sheffield and try telling the locals a ground share would be good here and you are likely to be lynched, even though it makes complete financial sense esp given the state of Hillsborough compared to Bramall Lane these days.

Man Utd & City shared after OT was bombed out in WWII, it can be done and seems the obvious answer. Which takes me to the geography point, oh well lets not talk about Trafford / Manchester issue.

In all events economics are going to be the key here, at least if Liverpool as a City wants to retain two Prem clubs, as Sheffield and Bristol before found two sides in the top tier are not guaranteed and once out it's tough to get back.

The picket and the postage stamp 5:57pm on 22 Oct 2009 Like much else not what it was in your youth Mark, I think that we live in an era that is increasingly sanitised of sentiment. The Royal Mail née GPO will be fragmented further and sold off in time. Current events will only hasten this and few will (methinks) mourn it much.

Though like steam trains and local shops they will miss it when it's gone.

Review of the week 4:54pm on 09 Oct 2009 Lets just be right about this here butchers dog, it comes from an earlier era when fitness was equated not with some wretched keep fit regime or DVD but eating well. Ie in an era of poverty and bad food.

A butchers dog had a constant supply of nice juicy bones, so was thought to be fit and well. Note not access to junk food so not fat and spotty!
Life in the old dogs yet 1:49pm on 30 Aug 2009 As a United fan I would say Fergie needs to back Berbatov and give him a run of games or get a creative forward he can back and can play well with Rooney.

I thought Giggs had a shocker in the first half and it wasn't a sensible choice playing him against such a young fast side, he looked short of a yard of pace. Then of course he does the business second half so what do I know, but I still think that was as much luck as skill.

The pens, Rooney yes, get over it, the keeper took his leg end of. Fletcher? I thought it was when I saw it live, forget the handball bit clearly ball to hand which wasn't outstretched, but in the moment it look like he took out the man having gone in recklessly. On the replay... I've seen them given but also seen them not, so it's down to the ref that one.

I'm glad he's backing Foster the experience will only help and of the two keepers they both erred but Foster made the save of the match.

At this point in time Chelsea are looking the team to beat, Fergie needs to decide what his best team and formation is and while we aren't playing well if we can still go on and win then we stand every chance of still doing it in March which is the key thing.

No more bright sunny days 11:43am on 23 Jun 2009 I never learnt more about photography than when I started out with a 35mm camera with Kodacrome, manual focus, manual flash, manual light reading and you really had to compose the shot.

Film and developing was expensive so you really did not waste a shot, now you can take 20 pictures of the same thing and chuck the lot if need be - it makes life easy, too easy for craft I'm afraid.
Five reasons why Brown is smiling 6:57pm on 07 Jun 2009 Brown has been very lucky with the lack of well organised or credible opponents. Those who have opposed him either look like they are having a hissy fit or thought they would be followed by more electable others.

Time is also on Gordon's side, probably best to let an election disaster happen, he falls on his sword Dave C inherits a mess and surprise, surprise has no policies. Gives time for a new (note lack of capital) Labour leader chance to reform a post Blair/Brown party and look to a better future.

Labour has run out of steam and they know it.
