Nutt gets the sack 8:37pm on 30 Oct 2009 No point in blaming New Labour. A Tory Home Secretary would have taken similar action. What appears to influence political decisions is how they will run in the Sun, Daily Mail, etc. As the LibDem home affairs spokesman said, we might as well have a committee of tabloid editors advising government. Oh for a prime minister who has the courage of his or her convictions and to hell with the tabloids.

Heskey's main job in the England team is to hold the ball up for the likes of Rooney to run on to. Bent also likes to play in the hole so if you pick Bent ahead of Heskey Capello will have to change the formation...
Chelsea will suffer if transfer ban stands 6:35pm on 03 Sep 2009 The fact that other clubs may or may not be guilty of a similar offence is beside the point. Imagine if all the players who regularly dive to achieve an unfair advantage were given a similar penalty to Eduardo's. If the football authorities believe that a particular offence must be stamped out they should hand out severe penalties and above all be consistent. The clubs would soon toe the line. But I am not holding my breath. Both FIFA and UEFA are highly selective when it comes to penalising clubs and/or players. The result, presumably of internal politics.
How England can win the Ashes 4:17pm on 10 Aug 2009 Ah, these armchair selectors who think they know it all. Australia made one key change by bringing in Watson and it worked. If we make wholesale changes for the Oval I believe it will destroy team morale. Okay, bring in Freddy if he's totally fit, drop Harmiston and bring in a number 3 who can hold the innings together. Who I don't know. Having said all that I think the Aussies are peaking and will destroy us next week. They're a lot better than the media would have us believe.

Edgbaston ratings 9:55pm on 03 Aug 2009 What is it with those brainless critics of Paul Collingwood? So far in the current series he has scored 221 runs in five innings. This makes him the 2nd highest scorer of our top six batsmen. Only Strauss has scored more runs. Added to which he is arguably one of the best fielders in the world. What does the poor guy have to do to convince the oafs?
Flintoff - England's gladiator supreme 5:37pm on 20 Jul 2009 Here's my theory on Freddie's stats. I think most people would agree he's a world-class bowler so why has he not taken more wickets and got more fivefers? Maybe it's because he's used as a strike bowler and his wicket haul therefore includes world top order batsmen, just like today's. And because he's injury prone he rarely gets a chance to mop up tailenders. I haven't researched this (i've got a life!) but it would be interesting if his ratio of top order to lower order victims is significantly higher than any of his contemporaries. Anybody like to seek out the truth!
Storm clouds gather over Camp England 10:42am on 12 Jul 2009 Hey, Cousino, what's your problem with Colly? His test batting average is 44.20. He posted the second highest score in the first innings. He bowled well and took a wicket. And his fielding is world class. If the rest of the team had his attitude we wouldn't be in the position we are in now.
Storm clouds gather over Camp England 11:25pm on 11 Jul 2009 Prior to the Aussies arriving here the UK media had written them off as an average team and unlikely to disturb England's progress to an Ashes victory. Maybe their disastrous performance in the World 20/20 series lulled us all into a false sense of security, but hey, they'd only recently beaten the Saffers in the Republic. And I must say, having watched the way their batsmen set about demolishing the England attack, they have some pretty useful players whose technique, footwork, determination and confidence in their ability is miles ahead of ours. Not sure about their bowling attack. We'll have to wait and see what they do to us tomorrow. But England have it all to do. The batting looks weak. The bowlers look ordinary. And Strauss must be one of the worst captains of recent years. By the way, the last time we beat the Aissies at Lords waas in the 1930s!
Patchy England left searching for inspiration 9:42pm on 10 Jul 2009 So, England come up against one of the top teams in the world and are found wanting. I am very impressed by this Australian side who, so said many in the media, should not have bothered turning up. They personify the usual Aussie qualities of grit and determination- not to mention consumate skill- which our side appears to lack. And I'm certainly not impressed by Strauss's captaincy. Every time the camera caught him he seemed to have a huge grin on his face. Mark Nicholas commentating on the Channel Five highlights programme was spot on when he said there was nothing to laugh about! And Strauss quickly ran out of ideas. When Michael Vaughan captained the Ashes-winning side of 2005 he had done his homework on the Aussies' weaknesses. He was constantly inventive in placing fields and changing the bowling. I get the impression that Straussy has been promoted beyond his capabilities.
