No defence for 'stealing' music 4:35pm on 03 Jul 2008 You know what I find funny though? I could start a website that lent music cds to people for free providing that they posted them back to me. I could even include a stamped envolope to send it back in. AND while I'm at it, the website could attract so many hits that online advertisers would just LOVE to give me money to advertise on the site and thus all the music bought would be funded.

And there's nothing to stop me from doing that. The user is just borrowing my CD, just like everyone does. And if they say THAT'S stealing then they might as well prosocute every single person in the UK, because just about everyone has borrowed a CD from a mate at some stage(and if you haven't I suggest you find some friends).

There are a number of businesses and schools in my area that use Firefox over IE. It's a matter of preference and security for most businesses above everything else.

In your first post you talk about things being tied to IE and Windows, there's such thing as Flash(and quite ironically in this situation, Silverlight) which many services use.

@ bighullabaloo, I think eyesy_79 is right, you seem to be tying Firefox to Linux. Fact of the matter is, if British Gas(I know the bloke who made their website) and others only want to target only IE, I say let them, it's their money that they're wasting.

@effzee25, Admittedly Opera is a very good browser in the form of standard compliance and a few other features, but there's just something that I don't like about it. To be honest I think it's mostly to do with the custom window chrome they have. Also there's a few things that it doesn't support(like transparency in favicons). Opera gloats supreme security, but last time I checked it was allowing the execution of cross-domain AJAX: a big no no.

Firefox 3 - triumph or disaster? 7:45pm on 19 Jun 2008 I've been using FF3 since mid 2007, well the beta versions anyway. I have to say that since I started using the betas, I've seen much progression. Ever single update and release was a huge improvement to the last, apart from the Release Candidates, obviously.

I think the best new feature is the "Awesome Bar" that was talked about on the dot.life blog. I own a small web design business, so I buy everything, sell things, read tutorials, view forums, browse for books etc and before the Awesome Bar I was ALWAYS losing the good websites.

From a designers point of view, I have to say it's very standards compliant, just like all the other versions of Firefox.

To be honest, it's not surprising their servers crashed, seeing as Mozilla were projecting about 5 million downloads and instead got 8.3m.

PS I love how no one has complained about the BBC's coverage of Firefox, yet they did about the coverage of the iPhone. Gosh some people.
Too much iPhone? 09:50am on 11 Jun 2008 There was one news story and a blog published on it. Hardly over the top I'd say.

I think it's totally right for the BBC to cover the iPhone seeing as it is a revolution in mobile computing.

For christ sake, if you're going to try and play the "big boys game" and try and sound intelligent, at least get the basics covered: a blog is a personal take on news not factual. Maggie can quite easily say that the iPhone is the best phone on the market - it's her opinion not actual fact.

And can I just say to all those people saying the iPhone is crap and all the rest of it, I bet if Nokia had come up with the iPhone you'd have all been like "ZOMG THIS IS LYK TEH ULTIM8 FONE".

Apple can create an "it" device and make it successful - that's all that really matters at the end of the day, how much profit they can make and I can say if the iPhone wasn't seeing enough return for Apple then they wouldn't have made a second version.

For christ sake, there's one news article on the iPhone, there's hundreds on Vista. Oh and do you remember the blog postings on that "Concept" technology Nokia are working on, not the actual product?

ANYWAY I hope that'll shut everyone up about advertising and what not.

The iPhone 2 does look generally good. I don't know if I'd use it as my work option, but for a personal phone it does everything I'd expect and more. The key thing about the iPhone though is it just works. You ask it to do something and it does it. No questions asked. Even 3rd party apps work in the same way. If you can even say this about a phone's interface: It's beautiful.

Whereas you have Symbian phones, LIKE my Nokia N95 which doesn't feel as integrated and just seems to always be flitting about.

I too am a software developer and was at the MSDN roadshow a few weeks back. ASP is currently the only technology that Microsoft have that provides a true web experience. There is Silverlight which is coming along leaps and bounds with version 2, which WILL support C# and VB in the browser - cross platform.

I disagree that IIS is such a great server product. I was working with the police a few weeks ago and they specifically refuse to use Windows or IIS in any of their servers because it's just not stable enough.

Microsoft hit a gold mine with the PC, but when it comes to servers, they're still far outmatched by the likes of Solaris and RedHat, which most web servers run on.
Will 7 prove deadly to Vista? 4:29pm on 29 May 2008 I think that it's time that there is some innovation in input because we've seen so much software innovation in the past few years.

Microsoft are going to have to be patient on the uptake of Windows 7 however as it will definitely not be taken up as quickly due to the learning curve and hardware demand.

To be honest I'm surprised that it's Microsoft doing this first and not Apple. I think the business model Apple has could pull this sort of this off better than Microsoft, for example the fact that Apple control the hardware and software in their machines.

It'd definitely be more of a home device than an office device there's just no room in an Office for a piece of software that could probably get a little bit irritating after a while.

Their best bet is to probably do two versions of Windows 7, one based at industry that can perform solidly for business, one for home use that is a little bit more fun and maybe one "ultimate" version that gives you the best of both.

As for the ongoing argument about who invented touch I don't really think that it's that much of an issue. Richard Branson didn't invent the aeroplane, Bill Gates didn't invent the computer, it's just the way that they implemented them that made the product/technology a success.

By integrating ads, you don't have to send data to Mozilla because the ads are generated there and then. Like when you see Google ad's on a page they've been generated by page content not by submission.

For me, I use Firefox every day. It's safe, it's secure, it's fast and most of all it just works.

I'm running both IE8(Beta) and FF3(Beta 5) and FF is clearly the superior browser. I picked up on this a while ago on my blog: http://rory.cobramedia.co.uk/?p=12
