This is pricelessly classic! Lucky that Miliband put it in a humble way as PC usually with a "only skill maybe". Otherwise it would be irrogant plus know-nothing, which might risking causing an outright boo from the audience. If Miliband's reasoning were sound, what he would say if another more skilled know-nothing politician happend to believe the contrary and started to argue with him on climate change? Whoops... bad luck.

Mind you that China invented beaurucracy and universal examination system before 100BC to choose officials according to their merits and capabilities. I can't argue how much that has left in the system of today's China. However, a proven specialist for the job, regardless of age, sounds much more credible to me than some 30ers who claim to have "only (persuading) skill maybe ".

A Brit amatuer pop singer, who manages to persuade the judges amongst thousands to win Britain's Got Talent show, must have better persuasion qualification as UK Ambassador to China according to the same logic. You must be with me, James?

Whispers of the Dalai Lama 8:18pm on 12 Mar 2009 I am no CCP apologist. In fact I frequently criticize CCP whenever I can. As an overseas Chinese decedent, I feel better myself doing so, since I can proudly say that I have done my part for the good people of my motherland.

However, whenever Dalai Lama comes into play with this "autonomy" stuff, I can not resist my anger regardless whom he is against.

My question is:

Does Dalai Lama have a shred of shame and regret for the mass suffering of Normal Tibetan people caused directly by what he has done in his life?

Normal Tibetans, James, I mean non-monks!

Monks in Tibetan culture was like high priests were in mediaeval Europe. They are privileged few sitting on top of millions of slaves.

James, where is your conscience and what was your logic when you only selected interviewing the monks? With your eyes closed, go to any normal Tibetan you knock into in a street, a farmer, a trader, a school teacher, whoever, and interview them, James.
Those are the people who represent Tibet, James, not monks! Certainly not Dalai Lama, not HR activists in the West.

If Dalai Lama is as kind, and as wise, as our media portray he is, why he is in exile for all these years?? Why doesn't he go back to Tibet ? Go back to "the Hell on Earth" in his own words, to "suffer" together with his own people, to confront CCP face to face as the leader of Tibet, as any ordinary enlightened monk should do?? Jesus Christ would have done so for his fellow believers!

As a monk, and as an “enlightened God”, Dalai Lama should have known very well, that Buddhism requires suffering being a necessary mean to achieve enlightenment.

What his personal suffering experiences are, if any? Touring finest cities in Europe? Guest staring “Vogue" magazine? Or hanging out with international jetsets and movie celebs from time to time? It is disgusting.

Congratulations, James! You did it! You know what? Personally I feel good, because this news is good for the general public – people in streets will be safe.

It is just as If one were interviewing an extreme Islamist in a London Mosque. When you got the same reply, you are happy because you know that London will be safe!

Now, if I may take liberty to add on after that, James:

I fail to see why Canary Wharf is able to compete along with NY and, say Shanghai, in a long run.

The reason for that is UK is failing fast and short of *stuffs* to sell, after the financial derivatives bubble. The only advantage of Canary Wharf is that English is still the dominent business language and EU (Germany) cannot compete with London on this one.

In part, you are correct on that the Congress is more a ceremony than a meeting. The decision has been made long before, and this is only a formality for cameramen.

However, I must admit that as a journalist, a blogger, you have missed a much larger picture, again!!

You are reporting a decision made by one of the largest economy on the planet, at this key moment of the world recession, on their plan to save themselves and help the world. Despite of the format of the "meeting", the conclusions drawn are not just kidding. These are serious decisions and extremely important measures, to China, and to the world as large!

Let me briefly explain it to you:

The decisions are not made by ONE dictator, Hu or Wen, but by the politburo as a whole.

The politburo is far from a piece of iron block as it may look like at the surface.

The differences amongst left, middle and right wings within the politburo is definitely (I mean it) bigger than the Nulabour, Torry and Liberal Dem of UK!

Behind each force of the politburo, there are at least a dozen massive thinktanks dedicated in all important arenas, with corresponding political and economical powers. Many of their views are dramatically different.

The decisions of the Congress are made by the combined force of aforementioned powers. The differences have been substantially discussed, debated, analysized, group-studied, even partially selected field-tested in some cases, and finally neutralized by all those thinktanks months ahead of the meeting, so that the meeting could be presented to the outside world in a "harmonious" way, rather than “shaken or stirred”.

Therefore, the "meeting" might not look like an exciting shoe-flying feast of South Korea, a name-calling competition of Nulabour vs. Torry, or a 40min hot-air debate session of your House of Lords, it remains de facto 1 of 2 the most important Congress meetings in the world right now judging by its consequences.

And you tell me 20 minutes is enough instead of 2-hour delivery?? Even Obama’s “Yes, We can” opening rhetoric will take at least 5 min.!

I appreciate your sacartics tone, James, but please stop being a frog in a well. If you are serious enough and professional enough, every single of my aforementioned point is enough for you to investigate and write a decent piece with much more depth, as your BBC colleague Robert Peston did.

First the West MUST get the strategy right!

When you are in trouble as it is now, the worst thing to do is to blindly "do something better than do noting", since you will have no clue and no guarantee whatsoever to success in doing so without a superior strategy. The resulting whole bailout plan is a pure panic shamble! You suffer from huge debt and excessive spending. The bailout plan aims to double your debt in essence and "dream” to double your spending too. It is insane! This wrong panic strategy will dig a hole that is so deep that you and your children will spend the rest of the century climbing up!

That the right strategy??

Personally I think should at least half the bailout package, especially for US. What you need to do is to try to export. Export-driven profits will enable part of the economy to stabilize, and then you take from there.

Export what? To whom?

The ONLY real advantage the West has over China is some of the West's high tech industries and products. China have been facing high-tech embargo for decades since 1989 Tiananmen movement. China has the money, and wants to buy high-tech. So .... ? It must be a good deal for everyone. In this way, the huge money will flow from China to the West NATURALLY via trades in stead of just meaningless lending.

Doing so will create a more tech-advanced China. But hello? Everyone should give something in order to gain. There is no such a thing as all good cookies for me, and no cookie for China!

Face it:

The West has little hope to pay back any debts if the current situation continues. What the governments will do when they can get enough loans or must pay back loans? The only way is to PRINT money. A lot A lot of Money! So the hyper-inflation, plus recession, will eventually lead to GREAT depression scenario! No escape!

The ludicrous logic of bailout everyone (good or bad) is politically correct but economically extremely poisonous!! It is doomed to fail. Those incumbents and uncompetitive ones have been saved by a man-made wrong design, instead of being correctly punished by the efficient capitalist market system. The general public will have no money left. Any tax rebate, etc. pocket-change will not enable public to have a high-street shopping spree to "kick-start" the consumption-driven model again!

Think first before act please! The thinking process might be long and painful, and it might not be politically correct. But it remains the most important part of how to deal with the current crisis. Do not panic and blindly support the politicians’ trillion dollar bailout. It is a suicidal medicine!
Clinton hears delicate criticism 6:35pm on 23 Feb 2009 As I predicted previously, the sole purpose of Hillary's trip is to ASK MONEY. In exchange, she just green-lights on human rights abuses by the CCP. So both are happy. They got what they wanted.

I feel ashamed for both govenments! Shame on you, Clinton and Obama!
Hillary Clinton's visit to Beijing 8:20pm on 19 Feb 2009 James,

1. There is NO North Korea Issue.

N Korea is a foot solder of CCP in Sino-US chess board. N Korea will not bark without the tacit support of senior Chinese leadership. It barks now because CCP wants to checkmate Obama's foreign policy, to test what he is made of.

2. There is NO climate change issue.

Obama embraces "global warming" buzz word because he realises that clean energy could be an effective weapon to blackmail China - so called "Green Blackmail", to exchange for more Chinese $$$, and China's commitment to keep subscribing US debts.

3. There is NO the economy issue.

US is bankrupt, literally. US has no leverage on China for the moment on economy. Artificially low RMB ? Give me a break. It's lucky that China doesn't depreciate her currency as everybody else does now. Instead, US treasury secretary should thank China for her "bank of last resort" support in this regards.

4. There is no human rights issue,unfortunately.

Clinton has no leverage currently to press CCP on the issue, except "raising the topic" at tea table for a minute or two.

5. There is only ONE issue for Clinton on this trip. Sadly, James, it seems that you even doesn't got a clue thus not mentioning it at all.

Ms. Clinton's real and sole porpose of her Asia trip is acting as the most senior "postman" possible, sending over Obama's near trillion dollar bailout bill to Chinese politburo, asking China to write a cheque with a signiture.
