Discuss our English quiz 2:43pm on 24 Jun 2009 Unless the English Lit GCSE has changed significantly since I did it 9 years ago, they were nothing like GCSE questions. Those questions were simply finding out whether you had read the book in question (most of which I hadn't), rather than testing your ability to analyse the work.
World Twenty20 hotting up 1:36pm on 11 Jun 2009 A lot of the cricket has been fantastic, but the odd seeding system has left a bad taste in the mouth. I was at Lords on Tuesday and the game between South Africa and New Zealand was a complete farce, with neither team looking like they wanted to win it. The fact that the seeding system wasn't clearly explained when I booked my tickets (as I also have tickets for Saturday at Oval) only compounds the situation.

I bought tickets for the Super8 and nowhere (obvious, at least) did it mention how the seedings would work for the Super8's. I don't mind, as I wasn't THAT bothered about seeing England, but I'm quite annoyed that they've supposedly done this (in my opinion) quite ridiculous seeding system and then used the excuse that it was to help people know what games they are going to see, when it was not clear on the website.

It all smacks rather of football's champions league, where the competition is engineered to ensure that the biggest teams get through to the latter stages. What is the point of playing a knockout competition if the order of the teams is pre-ordained?
Ashes preparation starts here 11:14am on 05 May 2009 I think the issue with Prior is based on conditions. He has spent plenty of time keeping in this country, and generally (although there are of course exceptions) keeps well when we are at home. He spent a few years keeping to Mushy, so he can't be that bad! However he has had relatively little experience keeping in foreign conditions; as a result he's bound to concede more byes and drop more catches away from home. This is augmented by his slightly unorthodox technique.

I think it's clear that Read won't play for England again; it's got to be between Prior, Ambrose and Foster. I would personally play Ambrose (a good keeper who scored some runs in the one test he played in the Windies), but also play Prior as a batsman. Prior can continue to work on the keeping and, similar to Alec Stewart, may at some point in the future become good enough to keep full time for England after spending some time playing solely as a batsman.
Ashes preparation starts here 10:11am on 05 May 2009 Agreed with the comments so far regarding Flintoff. The problem is replacing him with a genuine all-rounder. In my opinion, a balanced cricket team needs two players that have more than one skill; i.e. two people who can bowl and bat, or one bowler/batter and a wicketkeeper/batsman. England, for the past 4 years (since Flintoffs batting woes started) have not had this.
I would pick a keeper/batsmen (probably Ambrose, as a keeper who bats rather than Prior, a batsman who keeps), and then you are left with either trying to find a bowler/batter (Rashid could potentially be one, although I think it is still early for him), or you fudge the issue and pick two bowlers who can bat a bit (which is England's favourite option). At the moment I think the second option is the way England have to go, in the absence of a genuine class allrounder. So we are looking at most probably Strauss, Cook, Bopara, Pietersen, Collingwood, Prior, Broad, Bresnan, Swann, Anderson, Onions.

There may be only just over 10% of the population that can GET BBC 2 and not BBC 3, but what about the, I would imagine, far more sizeable percentage which HAVE BBC 2 and not BBC 3? As it stands I will be forced to watch the final hour of the game on my PC. It appears to be something of a half-hearted commitment to the NFL if you are not showing the whole game on the most widely available channel.
The most divisive and tasteless selection in cricket history 4:11pm on 09 Sep 2008 I'm afraid Aggers that I don't agree with your position re: Michael Vaughan. It's good to hear that he is driven and keen to win his place back. However all of the other centrally-contracted players are in the team in at least one form of the game, whereas Vaughan does not play ODIs and is not currently in the Test side. Central contracts should be seen and used as an incentive to players to get into the national side and perform, they should not be used to provide income for players not currently performing or in the side, in my opinion.
You Are The Ref #6 4:45pm on 13 Jun 2008 Not sure about the rules, but I would say both players get sent off. Then you chalk off the last French penalty, don't get anyone to re-take the Italian penalty, and we are back to the first penalty taker for the French with 10 men on each side.
Blatter backs off on quotas 11:02am on 31 May 2008 For those wondering about the Spanish rule; the limit has always been on 3 NON-EU players, as this is the only thing that can be controlled. There has not (in recent times) been a limit on Europeans playing in the Spanish League.

While the rule could not be bought in on the basis of nationality (anybody doubting that, please read one of the many posts above which clearly explains it), #53 makes a good point that it COULD be done based upon whether a player is home grown; this is the basis upon which limits for domestic- and club-produced players are implemented in European squads, and is also I believe part of the scheme introduced by the ECB to attempt to limit the number of foreigners in English cricket.
