Symonds out in the cold 11:14am on 20 May 2009 Personally i'm delighted not to see him in the squad!! The only thing that will make me even happier would be seeing McDonald line up in the actual TEAM in Cardiff for the first test, as well as finding Stuart Clark & Brett Lee not on the list and for the cherry on top maybe Mitchell Johnson could trip up on a 'rogue' cricket ball whilst warming up on the first morning and become unavailable only to be replaced by Hilfenhaus.
England player ratings 10:26am on 10 May 2009 My god, what a miserable bunch most of the people posting here are, did anybody else notice that we've just won a test match in 3 days? You don't do that without a good team performance. You can't give Bresnan a 2 or 3 because he didn't do much. Giving a grade of 2 implies that he performed poorly which he didn't, it's not his fault the match transpired in a way that didn't allow him to show what he's worth.
Oliver Brett is a cricket journalist and as such has a brain and the ability to use it, his ratings are based on how the player performed when he WAS playing a part, so you can only judge Bresnan for instance on his 7 overs of bowling, batting and fielding. Considering he didn't do much wrong an average mark seems appropriate as his bowling was good and fielding was good, the only criticism being how he batted. Likewise with KP, he may have been out to a beauty first up but how he encouraged Onions and his attitude in the field says a lot, lets not forget Onions was getting a bit of tap at first and without someone like KP giving him encouragement it might not have gone the way it did. The ratings are weighed up on the whole game and not just 'he didn't do anything, give him a 2' it's the constant barrage of criticism (even in the aftermath of a 3 day crushing victory) that epitomizes our attitude towards cricket, how about CELEBRATING a win for once, instead of pointing out the infinitesimal errors we may have made. I mean who needs enemies when we've got our supporters to slate us at every corner? Good job by Strauss & England all round in my opinion, and i agree with Olivers scoring as it weighs up the whole event, not just nit-picking like everybody else.
Bullish Bell starts the long walk back 3:19pm on 09 Apr 2009 daveski25, Tresco has retired from International cricket so even if they do pick him he won't turn up!! I agree with you on all the comments though, Bell isn't good against the Aussies and his mental strength will leave him entirely should he be picked, Shah isn;t technically good enough and Vaughan/Key aren't exactly the future are they!? Although i feel they would provide the best chance of performing in that role should they get the nod. I'd like to see somebody Steven Davies in there at some point (would certainly keep Prior on his toes having him in the side as just a batsman also!!) but he'd need to be blooded against the likes of NZ etc first before being thrown into the Ashes.
Oh, and theamazingmrwhite, Bell is without doubt the most naturally gifted, Pietersen couldn't be farther from it, he was originally a spin bowler who batted at 8 or 9 and would come in looking for fast runs late in the innings (like Mascherenas does in our ODI team) he became the batsman he is today purely through extremely hard work and commitment, just one more reason why we dhould respect the guy and why he never should've been forced out of the captains roll (although Strauss is also an excellent player/leader, just not as exhuberant or long term as KP could've offered)
Aussies send Ashes warning 09:19am on 11 Mar 2009 As an England fan only two words come to mind when I think of our chances this summer against the Aussies, they are "we're screwed" and that is being optimistic in all fairness. We don't have any special weapons up our sleeves at all, the Aussies have plenty (Hughes, Siddle, Johnson with bat & ball) and lets be fair, our starting XI looks pretty suspect, let alone our reserves.
When Freddie gets injured we'll have to call on someone below par to take his place which will cost us dearly, if the Aussies lose someone they are likely to be able to replace them with either Brett Lee or Stuart Clark. As I've said, we're screwed...
Media glare on Murray at Melbourne 6:43pm on 18 Jan 2009 Midgiedog, get over yourself. Are you so nationalistic and self involved that the only part of the article you feel is worth commenting on is where the reporter mentions 'English' and not 'British' Does anybody really care? Or should I say does anybody important care?
Either way, Murrays form has been incredible in the last 6 months and he has repeatedly beaten the top ranked players. More than deserved of his favourite status.
Hugely respected, much admired... but loved? 1:23pm on 13 Jan 2009 The only reason Matty Hayden isn't as fondly remembered as Warney is his inability to be self deprecating.
Warney would poke fun at everyone, but he also had no problem poking fun at himself as well which endeared him to most fans, Hayden doesn't have that 'cheeky chappy' sense of humour, and even if he does have a sense of humour he doesn't let others see it so all anyone sees is an aggressive, egotistical person who treats their favourite players with utter disregard, you can't help but respect him but you also hate him for it.
Whereas Warney likes to have a laugh, he wears his heart on his sleeve and is engraciating, accepting defeat with humility.
Which means you not only respect him, but you love him too. If Haydos had've been a more open person i'm sure the cricketing world would have accepted him as they did the other greats.

Intereseting comments Swanny, I do agree with one of the first posters in that there is a serious threat to the game with all this money coming in, as alot of teams (more so the likes of England) have a very different looking test team to the one day team, and surely Vaughny would be a little miffed that he's been leading the team (very successfully all in all) for nearly a decade, and just 12 months after he steps down for the sake of the one day game he's missing out on a £500,000 a yar pay day, I can't imagine his disposition being too sunny in the dressing room for the first test series after the game has taken place!! what would be a fair team to pick? do you pick the best one day players or the best servants to Enmglaish cricket who would surely be the ones most deserving of a large payday. Personally, i think they should pick me. I'm utterly crap but i could really use £500,000!!!
