AM Glass box for Thursday 07:57am on 29 Oct 2009 We are due to visit an aunt in law in hospital this weekend after she had a stoke. When asking my mother in law if there is anything we should take with us, she suggested fruit, small books and magazines. But not flowers - apparantly they carry infection. But the oddest thing of all is that there are no chairs for visitors - we will have to stand for the duration of the visit. This is to prevent infection too! I am lucky enough not to have been near a hospital in a while, and it makes me wonder what other things are now prevented/ prohibited in the wards?
Is this something that you can build a report around?
PM Glass Box for Wednesday 6:09pm on 28 Oct 2009 Heard that the MP expenses are undergoing a rethink and the allowance for "end of tenure" is to be reduced. Great, but why does someone who has decided proactively to stand down still eligible for it? I can understand someone who loses their seat at a General Election being faced with a period of time where they have to readjust and find alternative employment. But why when that person has not fought to say on? Many have made their intentions known some months before the election - even before an election is called in some cases- so why are should they get paid? They have ample time to line up their next job.
Do average speed cameras work? 10:42am on 24 Aug 2009 Yes, they do work on the A14 round Cambridge - what I want to know, that as this road is notorious for having hold ups, do they have to pay me when I can't do the 70 miles an hour average... I don't see why it can't work both ways. They have my registration, they could just send me a cheque once a month!

This rotten government wants to get us out of our cars. This rotten government wants us to spend a bit - and we would have bought some dinner in London. I cannot see how the train company can justify this amount for an off-peak return journey of about an hour each way.
So Boris can keep London for the Londoners - forget those of us who may add to his economy, and we will go to the cinema and have a nice meal locally and spend less.

it is about time that the definition of bankers was refined to spilt the lot in the City who made huge amounts of cash, and those who look after the local community from the branch network - some of whom have had to forgo bonuses in light of media hubub. The branches opened today - Saturday - splitting up the four day break that those in the City are enjoying. The term "bankers" is broad, and too many hardworking bank employees are having a hard time justifying their existence to customers who read the headlines and take out their frustrations on the nearest target.
Suggest a story 3:44pm on 21 Mar 2009 How many Mothers' Day cards will be undelivered this weekend because people forgot to check the size of the card and so put the wrong postage on it?
I was in the post office before Christmas behind a lady who as paying over £1 for a card that was sent in such a manner. She was not happy to find that it was from an estate agent who sold her house!!!!
This silly system of sizing of thin letters and cards is getting worse. Or am I alone in thinking this?
Veterans 3:37pm on 21 Mar 2009 Last weekend I was in Dunkirk and Ipres. I paid my respects at Tyne Cott and the Menin Gate. Tyne Cott was busy with people who were thre for a variety of reasons - including some students from a school local to where I live in Cambridgeshire. Whilst back in Ipres an English boys' school choir was preparing for a concert.
I went as I have a historical interest in the Great War - I have been to a few sites in Northern France and am never not tearful for the unbelievable situation that men found themselves in.
The War Graves Commission does an excellent job of keeping these cemetaries in pristine condition. The organisation in even the smallest of sites is amazing.
We should not deny the right for any veteran of any war to be allowed to go back to the place where they were sent to fight. Often they went unknowing into danger. The MOD can find funds to continue to make the same dreadful mistakes about war year after year after year. Perhaps if the politicians presently in office spent a bit more time at Tyne Cott, ot Thiepval, or Arromanches they may be more open to the idea that war is not the way to solve problems, but it is appropriate to say "thank you" for those who did fight.
