None agree to appear on Newsnight or be on PM.

McNamara (the ex -Alliance-Leics CEO) did appear on Newsnight. He made hand gestures reminiscent of a fair ground huckster working the three card trick or the pea under one of three egg cups. He talked like it as well. Banks, he said, are worried that they may lose small business deposits as the economy turns down. (So they refuse to lend to small businesses who need it - thus helping the economy turn down)

And King (who in fairness is not a banker but a PR man) was before the Treasury Select Cmmtte. Last time there, he told the Cmmtte that government couldn't tell bankers what to do. That would require nationalisation.

Today he said they should be told what to do.

So does that require nationalisation, he was asked? Well, he said, he wouldn't rule it out.

A PR man's joke? No. The usual evasion from anyone even remotely connected with this banking farce.

Merve the Downward Curve was at Birmingham University when Domenico Mario Nuti arrived there. (They'd known each other at Cambridge. Merve had been claiming Nuti couldn't speak English well, and so shouldn't teach in Birmingham. Nuti spoke English rather better than Merve, it turned out)

Nuti was an excellent Marxist and used to point out to Merve the way markets fail us all, and the need for the public ownership of the banks.

Goodness, that man HATES being wrong. Go on, Merve, admit it, the banks should be taken into public ownership as you were told, by one and all, at Birmingham, 25 years ago.

What he said about Labour Party policy, which it was at the time, is on record.

25 years to get it right. Goodness, these St. Johns men are slow learners. Two short planks think more quickly.

'This terrible recession', the Mare called it. To my ears he used the high ironic tones of someone who doesn't care and thinks his BBC contracts will insulate him from it's effects.

I'll probably get called 'Cloth Ears' for hearing Mare that way.

That's the insult he used to use, anyway, when listeners misheard him. According to him.

The crisis in Western society is due to it's history, the way we live, and the way we plan to live.

It seems increasingly clear that the West is wrestling with economies without the inheritance of slavery, without the history of colonial land grabs from Australia to Canada, and without plans to continue to have the rest of the world to do their work for them, in return for paper shuffling (or 'banking and financial services'. as it is so pompously called, with a million or so workers tied up, willy nilly, in scam production, producing 9-10 per cent of our "output").

India and China do NOT have to look to their history and their intended futures and know themselves to be bankrupt, morally and politically.

Contracting the economy to spite one's enemies, as Thatcher did, (fighting the Trades Unions (ordinary working people), here, and Islamic oil externally) only works if your enemies believe you CAN win.

Ours know WE are bankrupt morally and politically. Contractionists here, like the Thatcherite Tories (did you EVER think Osbourne and Cameron were ANYTHING ELSE BUT??), can only spite their own society - US!

Those who want our own poor to be further impoverished, so that the Georges and Davids of this country can live lives of ease, in a nasty closed society, here, can rest assured that the Tories will do exactly that, further spite the poor, given half a chance.

The slump won't save the West, thank goodness. It's just the way they've chosen to go.

And hearing the Tory spokesperson on The Daily Politics, it looks like Cameron and the Tories commitment to SLUMP has got to this stage.

They plan to retire government debt which should continue to be held.

They will cut schools, house building, hospital and health spending to do it.

As I say, debt which should not be repayed because repaying it would cause too much damage, should be extended.

That, Rat, is true of mortgagees, small firms and the equitable spending of governments.

Public debt seems better spent. Building houses seems a better idea than inflating the price of the existing stock.

We are/were in the grip of contractionists who WANT unemployment and recession. They will try to call in every sort of debt.

Debts a society owes to itself are always questions of distribution and redistribution.

The work debts America and the UK (have) built up against slaves and now, again, China and India, can only be paid by transferring industrial work to those who owe it in our societies.

If the present 'rescue' package fails because it fails to acknowledge that debt, sobeit. That is corrigible.

If it fails because the Contractionists win in their plan to discipline labour at home and abroad (precisely so that 'the miners who work almost for nothing', already, will then work for even less) then it will be a tragedy. That too is corrigible.

Both failures need the direction of labour and the government sequestration of large scale financial holdings.

But those things should be brought in anyway.

At this very moment we seem in the hands of the 'sensible' who now see nothing wrong with the dishonest way our societies, individuals and governments, live. Just a few days/weeks ago, they saw themselves for what they are and panicked. As they did after 9/11. As they did after the dot.com boom bubble burst. Now they are trying to close their eyes tight, and hope things can go on as they 'used to'.

Some unrepayable debt is reasonably held.
The poor of America are entitled to homes.
If they renege on their mortgage debt they lose their homes.
Governments can reallocate resources so that such debt is retired.

What governments do and what governments own, we decide upon.
The CEO of a hedge fund and it's owners are laws unto themselves.

This whole problem began with reasonable private debt, the subprime poor providing themselves with homes in a nasty market driven regime, being called in. Unreasonably.

The banks won't LEND to owt but government. Not mortgagees. Not small firms, not even each other. Do keep up, White Rat, where HAVE you been these last months?
