Additions to Alys' Garden 3:19pm on 29 Jun 2009 I've just let the chickens eat all my (strangely large) wild strawberries merely because it was so lovely to watch them having fun. There was one point where they both had lots of red strawberry juice covering their beaks and I swear they looked pleased with themselves.

I say pinch out, Sort of concentrates the plant into bean production and does help with blackfly population as they love the tender top shoots. Pinch out when you have at least five flower and preferably before the pods appear.

I was wondering where all the ladybirds were as teh aphid population seems phenomenal this year. And then yesterday the garden was crawling with ladybird larvae and hoverflies. THis made me think that in the natural order of things predators don't really appear until the pest populations got fairly big.

Get chicken now. they're so funny. Don't smell, if that's what you mean by dirty? Sure they poop alot but you just scoop up the bedding onto the compost and viola instant accelerator for the pile. They do scratch up plants but mine have a fox proof run and house, so they can't get near anything i love. I intend in the autumn to use them as chicken ploughs and let they scratch through the beds, but till then they live in a coup and run. I'm building an extension on the run so that when I'm in the garden they can have a bit more fun. The eggs are lovely, but not nearly as lovely as watching happy hens scratch about. Plus they're really soft and like being held and stroked. Lovely pets. Can't believe it took me so long to get them.
Spring awakening 2:21pm on 11 Feb 2009 Yup, you could even sit under if you were feeling a little blue. However, although its an eco bulb, it is using energy to grow something. That said if you're north facing it does make a huge difference and yes all your seedlings will stand up straight.

There are variety of different makes out there either search 'growlight' or 'growlamp'. I think it's cheaper to make your own and expect to pay about £15-20 for the bulb (they last a very long time).

You also don't need any base heat if you use a growlight.

Post-Christmas pounds 8:01pm on 07 Jan 2009 Lovely garden birds. I saw a whole tree of long tailed tits at my parents. We also watched a woodpecker make light work of mummified apples left on the tree and numerous others that mother shouts the names off at the kitchen window and I sort of nod in ignorance. My mother likes to call me up and reel lists of birds at the window--it's a little eccentric, but I like hearing about them. My sister and brother gave my dad one of the those whizzy weather stations for christmas, so now I get precise temperature and winds directions as well as bird names.

THe raspberries with a little love will move fine, but mulch well so the frost doesn't do too much damage. I'm jealous of the brick path that was on my list, but I still struck down with this pesky bug.

The seed list has gone up and down with the fever and is now somewhere near reasonable I just have to make all these funny ideas work and look pretty. But oh how I understand wanting more space. Fingers crossed I move up the allotment list or I'm going to start making a move on the patch next door . . .
