However I fail to understand why she wasn't willing to take the opinion of her coach on board with the stiffer pole. As for the personal goal having been hit, I think her psychologist has something to answer for.

It is not to do with fitness, but almost all to do with altitude acclimatisation. The number of Red Blood Cells in the blood is increased through altitude training allowing more oxygen to be carried per unit time. Yes this increases slightly with normal high-intensity training, but nowhere near as much if you trained at altitude.

I don't know much about the 'boks training regimes, but my bet is it includes some work at altitude, which is more than our lads do regularly.

One example of my point is the TV programme showing the celebrities who climed kilamangiro (sp?), Chris Moyles struggled far less with the altitude than the GMTV presenter and Ronan Keating, not because he was fitter, but because he used to smoke. This has damaged the internals of his lungs, such that every breath transports less oxygen to the blood, so the body adapts by upping RBC construction (or dropping the removal of older RBCs)
Strife in swimming's fast lanes 1:53pm on 01 Jun 2009 I say roll it back, I know it sounds boring, but I'd rather see the fastest (wo)man win, rather than whoever got the deal with the manafacturer of the suit which happens to have been released most recently, and the world records prove than they DO have that much of an effect, is there any proof based around football boots or rugby pads?. Where this becomes an issue is at minor meets, age-groups and national champs where not everyone can afford to train as much as they want to, let alone fork out £200 plus on a suit made from the most up-to-date rubber, which lasts for a couple of races and then needs replacing.
Man Utd pile on agony for Wenger 09:06am on 06 May 2009 The reason Almunia could never become England No.1 is because there is equal grounds for him to become England 'keeper as there is for him to play for Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. He can get / does have a British Passport, not an English one. This is why the British FA's have the gentleman's agreement in place, as it simply is not fair to decide which team a British citizen would play for.

As for last night's game, Arsenal were awful. However, the reason that they were awful can be attributed to the two unlucky mistakes early on. Neither player should be lambasted for theirs, as Gibbs' could have happened to anyone, and Almunia had no right to expect Ronaldo to shoot. As Jens Lehman said at half-time (why on earth was he a pundit?) you cannot position yourself for a save untill the very last minute, as the new(ish) balls can dip and swerve at any time.

Final point, the Arsenal "fan" at no.8 should do a bit of research into the team he has been a "fan" of for so long. Lenham? That's almost as bad as the Chelsea fans who say Bosingwa as Boswinga. As plastic as hollywood mammaries.

To me at least it seemed as if you were referring to all sports science as quackery, yet then approving of several things sports science did for Clive and his teams. Never-the-less I do believe a negative attitude to all technical speak is manifesting itself in the media, with it all being labelled as jargon and buzz-words. When to the trained ears, the terms are perfectly warranted. A list of most mis-understood jargon appeared on the BBC site recently, most of which, were bona fide technical terminologies.

But never-the-less, good article. And I'll leave you to it now.
