Code dead? 12:13pm on 05 Oct 2009 Rules of a sport don't determine how it is played as much as the style and approach of the competitors so the ELVs line of the article is pretty weak. Surely interest at grass routes in any sport is created at the highest level by success, and by their high standards in most sports the Australian rugby union team have not been successful of late, hence a lack of interest. Perhaps changing the super 14 to smaller groups in stead of a league would improve the product as more would be riding on every game?

I would expect union to survive in Australia simply because at the moment it is a bigger game on the world stage than the other two which means there should (in theorry) be bigger sums of money involved from TV etc. Rugby league is still a game for Australia and the North of England and Aussie Rules doesn't leave Australia bar the odd mixed rules clash with Gaelic football.
Maradona turns to fans for helping hand 11:46am on 31 Aug 2009 Something is very wrong with the Argentina players if they need the fans closer to them to be up for a vital qualifier against Brazil in their own back yard! Not sure that the players available to Argentina are not as good as previous generations, but maybe the supposed weaker nations in South America are not so weak anymore, which is a good thing. Not too sure about the "anti soccer" comments above, aswell as producing good players they also know how to dish out the rough stuff.
South America's wayward footballing stereotypes 11:23am on 03 Aug 2009 I'm amazed that Brazil have such a good defensive record in world cups. Apart from USA 94 I can't remember them looking rock solid. Or is that that my mind looking for reasons to think of them as weak defenders as I've always been told?
Milan to Madrid via Manchester 08:23am on 09 Jun 2009 Not sure that the move on it's own will help Kaka or Real Madrid. At Milan the team was built around him. The midfield was set up to allow him to win matches for them, but unless Madrid has a massive overhaul of players, I'm not sure they will be able to do the same. There seems to be a pattern of Brazilians players being amazing for a couple of years but not being able to sustain it, is there a reason for this?
From prodigy to superstar 11:29am on 27 May 2009 What I like about Messi is that he doesn't really fit the profile of a football superstar. Ronaldo is physically big and strong, has the looks and the ego, and seems to have been grommed for being a top footballer for most of his life. Whereas Messi was thought to be too small and rejected at first. He isn't built like a modern sportsmen his fame is down to natural ability alone.
How football conquered Brazil 6:21pm on 21 May 2009 Just watched the UEFA cup final and its fair to say that the Brazilian influence in the Shaktar team was the match winning difference. I was just wondering how these moves to Eastern Europe are viewed in South America? For me the apparent lack of strength in the domestic league and the slightly colder weather than back home suggest it has alot to do with money for either player or club, or both. But is that the case because I know little about both parts of the world? I would also be interested to know the standing of such players in their homeland, are they big name players?
The big attraction of the Libertadores 8:29pm on 20 Apr 2009 For me there is a little bit of wait and see with the young South Americans at Manchester United. I have read the concerns about the players loosing or not developing the flair that is associated with their country, but isn't there a chance that more will be added to their game rather than taken away? Could they not become a more complete player if the European and South American traits are gelled successfully?
State Championships past sell-by date 09:44am on 15 Apr 2009 Would it not be possible to scale the state competitions down so that there is in element of comprimise? The bigger clubs could use them as a pre season or a reserve competition, while the smaller clubs still get some prestige games. Surely tradition can be hung onto with such a massive commitment.
What's gone wrong at Charlton? 8:03pm on 28 Feb 2009 In the Curbishley era whenever Charlton sold you could be confident that there was a youngster coming through or a good buy from a lower division able to replace the out going player. Perhaps Curbishley saw that these sources were drying up or that the bigger sums of money in the game meant that Charlton's demise was inevitable. Altenatively Dowie came in and tried to make the club a buying one and bought rubbish!
Smith tackles the big issues 6:13pm on 12 Feb 2009 Rugby league is massive in Australia, rugby league is massive in a few areas of the UK. That must change if we are ever going to compete.
