Thinking about children and crime 10:48pm on 04 Feb 2009 People behave the way you expect them to. Knwoledge, thats been around for quite some while now, and is taught in school, as it is in management training. So while you get rid of kids prisons, you also have to change the way society treats these kids in the first place.
EU considers its response to Obama 00:50am on 30 Jan 2009 The US are considered friends by the vast majority of people in the whole of europe. That is the only reason the people were so shocked when they fond out, that "one of us" was committing these acts, that went against any sense of justice that we have. When Russian, Iranian or Chinese governments torture, kill and generally bend the rules, it doesn't surprise us. We expevt them to have a lower standard in those things.
So we should forgive and help, take some of them in. It won't threaten the existence of europe, plus we would be doing some friend a favour.
Festive Germans still prudent 12:49pm on 11 Dec 2008 The thing that surprises me the most is, that I always percieved the germans as having a gloomy outlook, talking things bad. The euphoria of having one nation divided was over so quickly.
But at the moment the germans are the optimists. Really. I talk to a lot of business people in spain and britain, and they are much much more worried than the germans.
So maybe germany does not need the tax cuts to stimulate their inner economy. And then they shouldn't. No way.
Lisbon charm offensive 4:04pm on 07 Dec 2008 What I don't get is that, the authors of this treaty know that the way it has been written alone, is a great source of suspiciousness and restraint towards a closer europe. the people are very weary indeed, and not just in ireland. So why don't they just write it out again? I mean they should be advertising this much more. They have the capacity to start a mayor PR campaign and win the people over. Not just in Ireland, but in the entire EU.
This treaty needs the democratic legitimation of a direct vote, since every constitution is only as strong as the peoples faith in it. We should know this by now, and stop trying to sneak this whole issue past the people.
We need this treaty in the long run!
Merkel: an unlikely success 08:14am on 30 Oct 2008 Beeing German I find myself in somewhat of a dilemma.

I do like Merkel for the stated reasons: she seems to think before she speaks, she never appears agressive, she uses facts and logic instead of big words to win an argument.

Sadly this can not be said about her Party.

I think Germany will end up with another grand coallition after the next vote, so that nice lady will be ours to keep for another 4 years.

@4. and 5.: the problem is, that people who really are informed about the doings of the EU never, never ever say those things.
The Bin Laden Question 12:53pm on 26 Oct 2008 Osama Bin Laden thrives on an agressive America. The hardline-policy of the Bush Administration has given the entire jihadist movement the current momentum. With every stray missile, every false aprehension made by the US army, hundreds of "freedom fighters" flock to the terrorist training camps. On the other hand, issues such as Guantanamo Bay and the invasion of Iraq, have weakened the US considerably on the world political stage.
I would say, that OBL would prefer the candidate who is most likely to keep the things as they are.
Fast food nation 11:14am on 13 Oct 2008 The last American people who visited me in Germany, were two texan girls. They pretty much confirmed the MTV image, bringing over 20 pairs of shoes on a 14 day trip.
But I could not help myself beeing very impressed, when they were confonted (as Americans so often are) with Pres. Bush and his war on terror, eventually yelling out:" F-word you! George W. Bush is Texan! You know nothing about us! We love Bush! Yeeeehaw!"
Right they are. We know so little and complain so much. Nothing against constructive criticism, but constantly moaning Europs, who have no idea about what their own countries are up to, should not be leaning out of the window too far!
