'Vigilante retribution' 6:33pm on 25 Mar 2009 In my view, there is so much anger and frustration bubbling below the surface that action like this was inevitable and I will be surprised if it remains an isolated event.

The collective incompetence of government, regulators and bankers which is rewarded with high-living and telephone number payments courtesy of the taxpayers angers many who lose both jobs and homes. Those same taxpayers are being frustrated by the constant denials, buckpassing and complete lack of accountability.

While I do not condone these actions, I cannot condemn them.

Quite agree except that since, by a long way, the majority of corruption eminates from Westminster (and that is the most expensive), Westminster is the level of governmant we could best do without.

Ref the Glenrothes register, this might be quite innocent but is an incredibly serious matter and really ought to be thoroughly investigated. Like some others, it seems, I feel some disquiet that the BBC having made a token report, now seem to be ignoring it completely.
Confusion on the wildcat strikes 11:30am on 02 Feb 2009 If the Labour party had honoured it's pledge to hold an EU referendum, this particular dispute is unlikely to have arisen. But then 'Labour and honour' brings to mind Lords and lobbying, Jowell, Hain, Harman, Straw, Beckett. etc.
Budget trigonometry 1:13pm on 30 Jan 2009 Declaring an interest, as is fashionable for the moment, I voted SNP for the first time at the last election.

Now it may be that I am gullible or it may be the reality, I honestly don't know, but I do believe the current Holyrood government are doing their best for Scotland - not something I could say about any previous government, London or Edinburgh. Some things I'm not happy with but then perfection is elusive.

The largest oppostion party is Labour and I expect them, indeed urge them to challenge government policy whenever appropriate, that is their current role and that is how our country will be best governed. However, I want their challenges to be constructive and targeted on Scotland's best interest. Instead my impression, right or wrong, is that their primary position is to oppose then look for a reason to oppose. Not objecting objectively, so to speak :) Such appears to have been the case with this budget. That said, Mr Swinney is, no doubt, aware of this handicap and the responsibility for reaching agreement with enough of the other parties is his alone.
Yates of the Yard (2) 12:22pm on 30 Jan 2009 the cash for honours affair left me with the impression that justice had not been done.

For me the possible reasons were either

1) The CPS, not for the first time, were either lacking in judgement or subject to influence.

OR

2) The police were incompetent or subject to influence.

OR

3) Both of the above.

What has emerged thus far in the cash for Lords travesty screams out for investigation and poses many questions about the House of Lords. Even unsuccessful prosecutions would be extremely informative to the public about the mechanics, morals and process of an organisation which is generally beyond public focus.

Given that the peers concerned in this case are appointed, it might inadvertently throw more light on the cash for honours fiasco, and, of course. we have a new police commissioner who is hopefully less political than his predecessor.

Personally, I believe failure to investigate will further damage public confidence in our police, failure to prosecute will do likewise for the CPS.
