The Deal 02:40am on 26 Nov 2008 Oh yeah, I seem to recall a certain highly influential European economist who stressed the importance of the "Social Contract". I believe his name was John Locke. I believe that you may have heard of him, after all he was alive back in the 17th century or so and his treatise became a guiding principle for various governments.

Does history favour freedom? 07:15am on 22 Nov 2008 Actually, the Chinese government is currently practicing a form of meritocracy that was originally advocated by Confucius. I seriously doubt that China will turn completely democratic, but it will be adapting itself to the needs of the nation and balancing that against the political realities of the world.

It is my impression that China wishes to be a "quiet" power: one that can assert itself when absolutely needed but relying almost extensively on diplomatic endeavors. When it has something good going on, it will celebrate it just because they've worked hard on completing it.

The irony at the moment is that the US and EU want China to increase its participation in peacekeeping duties and yet complain about China's procurement of equipment to meet the requirements of a modern peacekeeping force.
Curious convoy 6:54pm on 17 Nov 2008 Just wondering, are you supposed to be a reporter or are you supposed to be a defense analyst? Because the two careers are mutually exclusive, and you're not as much of an analyst as you imply yourself to be.

If you want to speak about the trivial ills of China such as that "curious" convoy you mentioned, you might as well get yourself a personal blog away from the BBC.

I've read other newspapers where they did report on the mobilization of Beijing's SWAT and various other counter-terror commandos for the Olympics; and that was as far back as two years ago where it did matter.
Tri as hard as you can, but sometimes it's not enough 5:42pm on 19 Aug 2008 Can we cue in "Ode To A Grecian Urn"? I heard about the unfortunate stomach issues that befell the British team but reading the part about the German winner doing triathlon because of a girl simply took the cake.
