Bopara in need of an Ashes score 11:19am on 20 Jul 2009 Oh dear, a couple of failures against what is still the most fiercely competitive and probably the best team in the world and out come the moaners and doom merchants. The demand for instant success and short termism are the blight of many aspects of especially sport. I seem to remember a young man in 1975 starting his test career against the Aussies, with 0, 0, (certainly got a pair on debut) then 1 and 31 I think - out he went from the test team much to the delight of the Australians who were ecstatic so see England discard Graham Gooch because new he was class. Give Bopara a chance, if he has genuine flaws in technique or temperament they will be found out at Test level and he'll be dropped, not because of a couple of bad scores against our most combative opponents.
Brilliant Barcelona outclass Man Utd 09:39am on 28 May 2009 Barcelona on the night was too good simple. No one in Man Us midfield could match Iniesta. Carrick was woeful giving the ball away constantly, although most Man U players did. Too many Man U players had an off day. The way Iniesta brushed off Anderson en route to the first goal was embarrassing, ditto with Etoo and Vidic. The second goal was a result of two players going for the same ball, never mind Ferdinands lamentable positioning.
Wrong team selection, surprised he started with Giggs and especially in that position; wrong to put Rooney on the wing. Hindsight is always a wonderful thing but Tevez should have played behind Rooney and Ronaldo given a free role. It doesnt show that United have become a bad team overnight, they were second best everywhere on the night. It shows that they were the best team in a poor domestic season, and at least itll cheer up the sore losers at Anfield and the sour blue half of Manchester. But can we finally nail the fiction that the hundred miles an hour, emphasis on pace Premiership is the best the league in the world.
Man Utd pile on agony for Wenger 09:00am on 06 May 2009 As a neutral with no axe to grind I find sevenseaman's assertion that the penalty was spot on to be astonishing. The referee was average for such a game, and Italian referees penalise tackles that an English referee wouldn't - remember the English referee in the 1994 European Cup Final? Savicevic controlled the ball with his studs raised (as had the defender) and whilst the defender put his hand up for a foul Savicevic scored with an unbelievable lob from the touchline. An Italian referee would have penalised that, whilst letting all the shirt pulling go unpunished. You would never have any tackling if after winning the ball the opponent falls over, which seems to be the basis of sevenseaman's argument. Dreadful decision no question, and about which there is near unanimity. You can bet if the victim were playing in a French team that nice Mr Platini would seek to have an immediate appeal.

The Marvellous, Magical, Mad Football League Tour - part II 09:44am on 17 Apr 2009 Ignore the jealous invective from fans of teams who claim we don't matter, especially those from the caravan park on the Thames. Layer Road was wonderful, so many happy memories: Friday night football full of atmosphere. The hailstorm of cushions directed towards inept officials at half time. Bobby Gough lobbing the keeper from the half way line, Colin Garwood dribbling through the Millwall defence straight from kick off in a 4-4 League cup match. The FA Cup v Derby in 1977 when we equalised in the 7th minute of injury time, those wooden boards were bouncing like trampolines. The anti-climactic end of season when we were relegated to the Conference, sitting disconsolate on the concrete terrace of the open end on a lovely summer day. Beating Wycombe at home 3-0, when the Barside destroyed Paul Hyde in their goal after he fumbled one in, he wouldn't face them when coming out for the start of the second half, but walked backwards to avoid them. Winning 2-1 at Adams Park with Scott Barrett's last minute winner as Paul Hyde stood arms outstretched (presumably saying "Don't worry lads it's going wide") as it flew past him; and beating them 5-2 at their place in the League. Roy McD scoring and then running over to T4 to shout "Who's the donkey now?" to a mate of mine who had been comparing him to the long eared beast of burden all game. Last of all beating Ipswich 1-0 in September 2006, the first meeting in the League for 50 years. Mostly visiting fans were appalled at the primitiveness of Layer Road, and the players were affected by the claustrophobic atmosphere and venom radiating from the terraces. Which is why I loved watching football for 40 years at Layer Road.
