Facts about file-sharing 3:02pm on 27 Nov 2009 The poor music industry. In the mid to late 90's they ripped us off and grew fat on their profits as the price of CD Albums crept up to £15.99 or higher in the UK. Suchs a shame for them that they couldn't rob us like that forever...

Nowadays people are more likely to spend 99p to download a single instead of buying the full album and risking not liking many of the tracks. My personal belief is that that has more of an impact on revenues than file sharing.

Home taping didn't kill the music industry, and file sharing won't either, it'll just force it to evolve.
BT and the iPlayer 09:29am on 11 Jun 2009 Its quite simple really, If BT isn't charging their customers enough to cover the costs of keeping their infrastructure up to date so it can cope with the ever increasing demand. They need to charge the customers more... Rocket science it isn't...

Thats the whole point of having tiered charging packages isn't it?
I live in the Hull area so use Kingston Communications instead of BT (no choice in that). I pay £30 a month for a 75GB package between the hours of 8am and midnight, with unmetered access between midnight and 8am when less people will be online. People complain that it is expensive, but I am happy to pay that for a reliable fast connection (I get around 13Meg typically) The iplayer always works flawlessly for me even at peak times, so if KCom/Karoo can do it and still make a profit, so can BT!

Charging the BBC (who will already pay their ISP for their bandwidth) is an unacceptable precident.
How damaging is illegal file-sharing? 09:48am on 12 May 2009 How much do bands get for each copy of a CD album that is sold? I read somewhere that it is only about £1. And yet the CD sells for between £7 and £12. If you could download legitimate high quality (FLAC or some other lossless codec) copies of the CD from each Band's website for £1 and you knew that the money would go directly to the band (ok maybe sell for £1.50 so the record companies get something for their production work) I believe that most people would download the legitimate copies as they would be paying the creative artists rather than the greedy record company monopolies.
In search of audio perfection 1:23pm on 23 Apr 2009 I find music ripped to 320kbps (AAC) to be good enough for portable listening, but have reripped all my CD's to FLAC (which is lossless) for listening at home through my Hifi. Streamed from my NAS to my Squeezebox, it sounds as a good as the mid-range CD player that I have (but haven't used for ages).
Goodbye "Knock-off Nigel" 10:46am on 02 Apr 2009 I'll be glad to see the back of those irritating anti piracy ads. I never could see the logic in bombarding people who have legitimately bought or rented a movie with an unskippable Anti Piracy message.

I saw a spoof of it once where the message was changed to 'If you had downloaded this film illegally instead of paying for it, you wouldn't have to watch this patronising anti piracy message before enjoying the film...'
