The end of a retailing era 09:58am on 31 Mar 2009 It's not just Banks and Retailers that should be afraid of Tesco. Just look objectively at how much market share Tesco has already across all the areas it operates in.

Already Tesco squeezes both ends using its huge purchasing power to drive down rewards for producers and to actually push up prices for consumers - do you really seriously think that Supermarkets lose money on BOGOF offers? No. The products are overpriced so that the retailer can give these offers and can buy market share with "Club" card schemes.

Add the ability to agggressively buy/loss-lead market share in new markets such as banking and Tesco is rapidly becoming a behemoth that will need government intervention.

We haven't yet learned the lessons of unfettered capitalism.

This is is common across all government. I work in an NHS department and this statement could apply to 50% of the people here too.
It's a cliche because it's true - you cannot get the sack from a government job short of doing something illegal. Certainly you need never actually do your job properly.
The most that will happen is that you may get transferred to somewhere where your incompetence won't actually kill someone, probably as a promotion.

Why not do what everyone without extensive knowledge of finance market had been assuming you were doing?

Instead of gambling it in dodgy finance vehicles for risky returns, invest instead in well-run companies producing REAL products and TANGIBLE services, invest in well-run governments and countries whoever they may be.
Can Darling kickstart lending? 12:08pm on 20 Nov 2008 I think it's time to stop this all and actually pay for the past mistakes. Does no-one esle get a feeling of deja vu regards trying to buck the market with government money?

We're heading for a recession and no amount of cash injection is going to stop it. Let the companies fail, change the legislation to once again require banks to have conservative levels of capital reserves and limit risky speculative investment vehicles.

With this in mind, I want my government to stop throwing money at the commercial sector in a bid to prop up an overvalued and overinflated housing market.

I cast that stone.

I refused to buy a house in the last two years due to the ridculous cost compared with my income.
I have no debts at all. I own everything I possess.

No-one can defend the actions of the banks and financial houses on this one.
If the taxpayer bails them (as is likely to be needed) then any solution must hurt the banks and penalize them in the long term for the problem. Banking is all about risk/reward and they need to be reminded of that.
Catastrophic system failure 08:26am on 30 Sep 2008 Throughout all of the last year and right up to now it seems to me that banks and financial insitutions are STILL not taking responsibility for their actions.
All I see reported is company representatives saying the equivalent of "it's unlucky" rather than "we messed up".

In my opinion, what is needed is a complete ban on dubious financial instruments and short selling. Rather than use taxpayer cash (or rather future taxpayer cash, as it doesnt actually exist but is merely a government 'promise') I'd be happier to take the pain of a recession.
I'm very sceptical that any amount of cash will solve the problem here, there's too much fictitious wealth in the system. We need a massive adjustment regardless.

Let's take the hit but make sure through draconian financial services legislation that it can never happen again.
THE THIRD COMING 2:25pm on 21 Jul 2008 Love is Noise I think is suffering from some lack of definition in the radio mix - the Glastonbury version is just huge in comparison. However, I sincerely hope this album gets the support it deserves so that the guys can go on and make another.

Although not rampantly commercial, "Forth" hints a great things to come.
