Kent skipper could be Key for Ashes 02:39am on 16 Aug 2009 Why is everyone always calling for Collingwood's head? What's the bloke got to do to make you understand he's not some underperforming dead-weight the rest of the team have to haul around?

In the last 12 months (13 Tests) he's scored 851 Test runs at an average of 47, including 3 centuries.

In the same time period the great Kevin Pietersen has scored 757 runs at the same average, but with only 2 centuries.

Haven't heard too many calls for KP to be dropped lately.
Breezing into plush Barbados 09:53am on 02 Mar 2009 Yeah, the pitch is flat in Barbados - but if England had played 5 bowlers they probably wouldn't be in the trouble they now find themselves.

The thing is, that's home advantage coming in to play. That's what home advantage is for. They want to defend their 1-0 lead, so that's one of the tools at their disposal.

That's why it's so hard to understand the ECB's decision to play the first Ashes Test at Cardiff, where England have never completed a game. They know nothing about the pitch or how it will behave or respond, thus the home advantage is wiped out.

Might as well play it in Dubai if they wanted a neutral venue - at least it would be sunny there.

I'd imagine Shah, Swann, Key, Denly and Simon Jones would like to know too.
KP makes headlines again 1:37pm on 05 Feb 2009 @ #124:

Ponting was out in the Boxing Day Test for 99. A match which Australia lost.
KP makes headlines again 01:18am on 05 Feb 2009 I'm sure everyone will be in floods of tears about KP's shot, but to do so casts him as the villain in a side in which his was the only score of note.

Yeah, he didn't make the landmark, but in the same over in which he lost his wicket - IN THAT SINGLE OVER - he scored more in 3 balls than the openers' entire innings combined.

If a few more of the top order got anywhere near the 90s, maybe we'd have something to judge him against. Until they do, we should give the bloke a pat on the back, say "well played" and get on with it.

Oh, and drop Ian Bell.
The most divisive and tasteless selection in cricket history 8:43pm on 09 Sep 2008 I don't give a toss about Stanford or Twenty20, but I'm extremely glad to see Vaughan get his contract back.

I would LOVE to see him opening (with Cook) either in the next Test series or the one after that. The man is simply one of the most experienced and best equipped batsmen we've got to take on the Indians and Aussies, and I'm confident that a combination of KP's faith in him (a la Flintoff and Harmison) and the removal of the burden of captaincy will see him return to the form we haven't seen from him since 2003 when he was the #1 rated batsman in the world.

He's got a good couple of years left in him now to leave an indelible mark on English Test cricket. Nothing would make me happier than to see him fired up and in form when the Ashes roll around next year.

In recent years while England have repeatedly underperformed in limited overs cricket while doing rather well in Tests, I may have given the impression that the only form of the game that matters is the longer form.

I now realise that Tests are for stuffy old bores in dusty pavillions, and the future of English cricket lies in the 50-over (or 23-over if you're "the second best side in ther word") format.

Until we win our next Test/lose our next ODI, at least.

So you're suggesting AB's dismissal doesn't matter because the series was secure and the Saffers didn't care if they lost the match?

Players at that level play to win every time. If they don't, then they don't belong there.

If you think KP should be blamed for losing that match (I don't, as it happens), then exactly the same should be applied to AB.
