Premier League & England Q&A 4:42pm on 24 Sep 2009 Re - Roberto Martinez - Dave Whelan also said he would never have a non-english manager at the club... If he is stating that he will support Martinez then great, but he is speaking as a fan. When the business brain kicks in 10 games from the end of the season and Wigan are in trouble, he can do the sums and then we will see if these are to give confidence to the manager now or if he really means it in the long term.
Ghost of Owens inspires Bolt 11:50am on 17 Aug 2009 Is there a reason why there are so many Carribean sprinters doing the rounds these days? Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas they all seem to have a crop of athletes able to bash the hell out of the rest. Last night there was 1 Britain, 2 Americans and 5 from Carribean. These countries have small populations and yet produce a large number of talented sprinters.

There isn't an obvious competing sport in these countries - they don't really produce Footballers (Dwight York aside) or Rugby players and the WIndies Cricket team is not in the best shape. I guess that the schools and athletics clubs are looking for the right physical specimens and bringing them in.

I hope that WADA has control over the activities, because even if Bolt is clean (which I believe he is, as he runs all over the world being tested by many governing bodies and not just the Jamaican system) it could encourage some to take a short-cut in order to try and emulate his fame and fortune.
Time to ease our selection headache? 1:37pm on 23 Jul 2009 I don't see why Athletes should get further assurance before selection takes place, this just plays to complacency. The selectors should have free reign to select who they think will be best able to repesent Britain in August.

On the other hand, if they want this kind of freedom, they need to give good reasons for all selections and these reasons should be based primarily on performances in the past 12 months rather than reputation gained over years.

Their needs to be a sense of uncertainty in order to ensure consistent top class performance. I for one don't like the American system as it does require the athlete to peak twice in the same year.
Owen worth Man Utd gamble 6:44pm on 03 Jul 2009 I think the assumption that Valencia and Owne "replace" Ronaldo and Tevez is a bit dumb. Clearly if you try to replace these 2 you will fail as they are unique players (I mean unique not "the best"). United don't just have one player for each position and a backup, they have a flexible squad ready for the requirements of a 65 game season.

United has a wealth of talent and players who Ferguson is already on record as saying will have a greater part to play next season - he is confident that Danny Wellbeck will be knocking on the door of the Englnd Senior Team this time next year.

So Ferguson is not replacing, he is shaping his squad for what he needs to win trophies. Supporters of other clubs might do well to follow his lead as his process seems to work.

BTW - the opportunities to uncover, sign and develop a player like Ronaldo don't come along every day (please show me a club in England that has success in doing this more regularly than Utd). The assumption behind many comments here is that the fialure to sign the next Ronaldo is a failure in Ferguson's management skills. Firstly, maybe he has (Tosic, Ljajic, Petrucci, Macheda etc.) and secondly neither has any other manager yet.

In a close season where 1 club decides to splash the cash there will always be a migration of talent towards that club. At least Utd are in the market for these players.

And on Tevez.... I don't believe that Utd really wanted to sign him even though they bid the asking price... wait for it before you send your "crazy blind Manc" comments... Utd didn't want to pay the full price, he isn't worth it. BUT, the worst thing would be for another club to get him on the cheap, so Utd bid the asking price but placed a strict timescale on it that they knew Tevez would reject (this is clear from KJ and tevez comments). By putting the asking price on the table, it requires others to match it.

The difference between the "Scientific Community" and the "Religious Community" is that the scientists openly state that what they study is theory and they point out the holes in that theory. They encourage people to question and study to further the knowledge we have. They review one another's work to ensure that opinion, bile, influence and politics are removed. They make their studies public for you and anyone else to see.

This creates advancement in scientific study and techniques which allow analysis at new and more detailed levels - this allows scientists to go back and test previous theories. I for one prefer that they do this and discover that the type of Cholesteral in eggs is good rather than bad. There was no significant drop in egg consumption and it hurt no-one. We now have better knowledge. The scientists who came up with the first theory will not create a new church and insist on faith in the "fundamentalist cholestoral theory" - they will accept it as advancement of ideas and be glad that they created the debate.

The religious community decide that denial and deciet are the way to go - you have to announce and show your faith in the "facts" before you can fully participate. You are actively canvassed to not question and to not develop new ideas - you are encouraged to stagnate and to proffer your stagnated ideas on to others. (I have never had an evolutionist at my door wanting to come into my house and talk about the work of Darwin.)

My personal belief is that the Bible is a great book that people should realise is probably 500-800 years old and written in the form of fables. Thes fables should guide your moral principles and inform your decisions on a daily basis. It is written in an accessible form to allow those who are lacking in education to understand how people should behave in different situations. It has been hi-jacked by a movement called "the church" in order to foster and maintain power.

You don't need faith - you need open mindedness. You don't need the church - you need confidence to live your life to a sound set of principles. You don't need to be controlled - you need freedom to express doubt and to challenge and to have your debate, and then while behaving like a well principled person, enhance your understanding and knowledge as a result of the debate.

Those who control the church will set the power of the bibles principles free if they relinquish power and encourage truely open debate for the betterment of society. Keeping people in fear is the worst form of pergatory. If their truely is a god, think about if he wants it this way? Does he want you to ensure people live in fear or with an open mind?
Strictly Message Board: What Happened Update 11:19am on 24 Nov 2008 There seems to me to be a thread of "don't blame the BBC, blame the judges and John S" running through this explanation. What is the relevance of the split between complaints about the BBC and complaints about the participants? I guess you will say that people acused you of shutting down the discussion due to comments about the BBC.... This would never happen, the BBC delights in self flagilation these days. And in any case, a production team producing for a show on the BBC IS the BBC as far as license payers are concerned.

For pity's sake people get real - it's a TV program. This is a blog and you are being sucked in - you are doing exactly what the producers want you to do. Ratings improve through this kind of debate - it does not change the result or the quality of the competition. There was a TV programme I watched in the 70s & 80s that urged kids to switch of the television and go and do something less boring. It's good advice.

Your question might not get the answer you want as Man Utd have a crop of Brazilians of their own. You might not be able to tell if they follow Utd due to success or if it is due to having Anderson, the Da Silva twins and Rodrigo Possebon in the squad.

Before Carlos Quieroz left there were these guys plus Ronaldo and Nani who all speak Portuguese - they will probably get a lot of TV coverage as they can do interviews with local media easily.

I was at Wembley for the Columbia game and although many will deny it, the whistle had gone for offside.

Take nothing away from him for the skill, but people do tend to talk about that moment as though it was during normal play.

Taming the Ryder Cup rodeo 2:39pm on 18 Sep 2008 Do you think all the unemployed bankers are now looking to earn some extra money spread betting on the Ryder Cup result?

Perhaps someone could give them a loan so they have a stake to play with? We are still lending money to people who can't pay it back for high risk investments aren't we?

Just taking a look at the US team - what exactly are they going to do with this information... You can imagine Azinger looking to find some weakness in the European side and trying to imaging pairings that NF might come up with and how to combat those pairings. Unless NF totally takes pity on Azinger and starts putting silly pairings like Wilson/McDowell or Hansen/Rose to help them out, he can basically choose almost anyone and they would feel confident of taking 2.5 points from each 4 available.

Europe to win 17-11 unless the US side somehow find some sense of comradeship and togetherness that collectively raises their game. If the do then it will be close if not then I might put myself and my 25 handicap forward to play in the singles on Sunday.
