Why was David Nutt sacked? 06:25am on 02 Nov 2009 Mr Johnson has inadvertently stated in public what we already suspect about politicians, that politics is about manipulating the truth for their own ends.
Battle for 2015 5:40pm on 28 Jul 2009 As someone posted earlier, the IRB doesn't get anything from ticket sales. So the only beneficiaries will be the stadium owners and the English rugby board.
As for the B&IL tour. Squeezed between an SA/Australian Test series,the IPL, Confederation Cup and the Tri Nations it just didn't have the same attraction. Possibly the SARU should be wondering if the B&ILs are past their sell by date?
Regarding the one comment that Saffas, Kiwis and Aussies should be gratefull for being allowed to play in the NH, I can only say that without them the European domestic leagues would be about as attractive as the football League 2 is compared to the Premier League.
Battle for 2015 07:35am on 28 Jul 2009 I can't understand how the WC should go to England. The last one was in France, 22 miles away, with games played in Wales and Scotland. Now the IRB is looking at giving it to the same region with games again played in Cardiff.
So much for the global game.
Confident Lions aim to out-flank Boks 05:55am on 19 Jun 2009 Matfield and Botha are generally regarded as the best lock combination in the world with Matfield the consumate poacher. Bothas influence in the L/O is as a very solid number 2 jumper rather than poacher. Matfield has a massive influence on the oppositions lineout strategy as they attempt to take him out of the equation by either going short, which reduces the attacking options, or long and risking Smith and Spies taking the ball.
With the reinstatement of the full penalty for most offences and the rolling maul, the L/O has once more become the major set piece platform, which I think played a great part in Geeches selections.
The major hurdle for the Lions, though, is for their big men to avoid the natural N/H instinct of going to ground early to seal off the ball.
Geech, in fact, seems to have gone for the SA approach favoured by Jake White of selecting players to clean out the rucks rather than using a specialist openside to compete for the ball on the ground.
I have a feeling that the Lions will find it difficult to consistently curb their instincts and remain on their feet against a pack of forwards who do it naturally and with purpose.
Kings provide Lions with timely test 3:36pm on 17 Jun 2009 It's going to be very interresting to see how the Lions backline performs against a really organised and experienced defence. So far Roberts hasn't really been tested and I have the feeling his inexperience might cause him frustration when he finds he can't bully his way past his opponent.
Apart from the Golden Lions match, the B&ILs haven't done much considering the amount of possession they've received and I reckon Saturday will expose them to some desperate attempts at breaking the Boks defence out wide which will lead to turnovers and intercepts.
All in all, the Lions pack, regardless of selections, is a rather pedestrian unit, workmanlike but with no genuine game breakers.
Kings provide Lions with timely test 04:30am on 17 Jun 2009 It seems the BBC picture editors have a sense of humour. In the story headlining O'Garas' anger at the rough play of the Kings yesterday, is a picture of him tackling a Kings player around the neck without the ball! The picture also wrongly identified ROG as the Kings player.
As for the possible selection of Hines at 6, this would carry shades of Geeches first Lions tour to SA in '74, when Roger Utterly was selected as a lock and ended up playing all 4 tests at blindside. The Lions also need another L/O option to combat the Boks 4 (5 until Burger withdrew), in which case if Hines is chosen Geech would probably go with MW at 7 and wish that he had another Mervyn Davies to complete the trio!
As for the game yesterday, I obviously missed the news that another Welshman, in the form of Nigel Owen, had joined the touring party.

The case for bonuses 06:19am on 10 Feb 2009 As an addition to my previous post. As a small business owner myself, if we are short of cash my staff get paid their dues first before the directors get paid. There are millions of business owners worldwide who are aware of this fact of life. In the case of board remuneration the question of bonuses shouldn't even arise. The question should be asked of these "concerned" gentlemen why they don't pay their staff first and then themselves if there's any money left in the budget.
The case for bonuses 06:11am on 10 Feb 2009 Effectively, the government has extended an overdraft facility to the banks secured by shares. What really angers me is that these corporate directors attempt to justify their ridiculous salaries yet they carry absolutely no personal financial risk themselves.
Any small or medium size business owner/director is asked to sign personal surety before a bank will authorise a facility. Whilst it may be a little late to rectify the past excesses it would definately sharpen the future decision making of corporate board members if personal surety clauses were included in their contracts by law.
Are Barclays' profits irrelevant? 3:51pm on 09 Feb 2009 I would love to see how these "executive" contracts are worded to justify bonuses. Surely, as a majority shareholder, the tax payer has the right to know the details?
