Are the Democrats losing their way? 9:29pm on 23 Nov 2009 Mark, getting back on topic, it strikes me that the problem is that the although the Democrats believe in their own policies, they think the electorate won't listen. They're convinced that, if they put forward the kind of arguments you mention, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck will somehow twist their words round against them. It reminds me of the way New Labour always seem to assume that a hostile Daily Mail headline must be a bad thing.

Or the English football team - convinced they've lost before the game starts.

Why was David Nutt sacked? 11:34pm on 01 Nov 2009 Isn't it partly the ambiguity of the drug categories? The scientists see them as a factual description of the harms; the politicians see them as statements of what we are going to do about the drugs. So when a scientist says a drug doesn't factually cause the harms associated with a category, the politicians interpret this as lobbying for them to do something different about the drug than what they are at the moment.
When hope is all that's left 11:15am on 29 Oct 2009 tell a different story to the statistics.

It's entirely consistent for unemployment to go on increasing even when the economy starts to recover, because economic growth has to be faster than combined population and productivity growth before taking up the slack in unemployment.
