Map of the Week: Floods of Tears 3:06pm on 22 Nov 2009 Considering this is one of the wettest areas in the country, it's no great surprise that it is prone to flooding. Sad though it is that ordinary people can be flooded out of their homes, and it is without doubt a personal tragedy, it was preventable,and the local authority which appears to have made no provision for such an eventuality ,should be called to account. In addition planning departments that allow housing on flood plains should be censured. No doubt however the insurance companies will now bring sense to the planning system by refusing to insure properties which are not above flood levels.
Clyde-built recovery 1:58pm on 21 Nov 2009 Sadly due to the policies of a long line of governments and the greed of the trade unions, the men who dug the coal, made the steel and built the great ships are now shelf filling in Tesco or working as waiters or kitchen assistants. Meanwhile successive governments and Scottish enterprise seem to think that the tourist industry is the only one worth supporting. There is hardly a single manufacturer of any standing left in Scotland making their own product. The inflated wages paid,and expectations of vast profits from shareholders in Britain means we can never compete with the far east or central or south America where manufacturing is concerned. Britain sits on a 1000 year supply of coal, yet it is an untapped resource now, because of the high wage cost of mining it and the fashionable idea that it should not be used because it causes global warming.
EU back to the future? 7:08pm on 20 Nov 2009 Baroness Ashton seems to have reached the heights on the strength of a degree in sociology, membership of the Labour party, and very little else. Apart from short spells of "work " as head of one focus group or another,little more was achieved, then as a reward for loyalty to the party she was raised to chief head nodder in the Lords and subsequently after keeping her head nodding to Gordon's tune, reached the ultimate non job , European commissioner. Now a promotion, if this can be considered that, though the scope for pocket lining will no doubt be increased considerably.

Devolution as evolution 6:48pm on 18 Nov 2009 Why are any new powers required, not a lot of any great use apart from high profile giveaways has been achieved with the present powers. Under the last administration, nothing appeared to be done at all that couldn't have been handled by the Scottish secretary in the past. Maybe the referendum should in addition to independence or status quo, include a get rid of Holyrood question.
Not the Queen's Speech 2:55pm on 18 Nov 2009 Pass a law guaranteeing to half the deficit ? Pity he hadn't passed a law guaranteeing, not to be as incompetent as every previous Labour government, and not to create the biggest fiscal deficit in history. This was more meaningless soundbite aimed at misleading the public, which appears to be Labour's only hope of survival, next will come the constant stream of half truths and blatant lies about the policies of the opposition designed to frighten the benefit army to continue voting Labour. This strategy will continue now right through until a general election unless the polls continue to look disastrous, then there will no doubt be a political assassination of Brown (if he doesn't cut and run )and the ex postie or the dark one will attempt to ride to the rescue in the hope of salvaging a wee bit of their gravy train.
Afghanistan ifs and maybes 4:50pm on 17 Nov 2009 Brown is running scared in case Obama, who sees his position in the popularity stakes falling away, pulls out his troops without reference to dear Gordie. It is looking increasingly likely that there will be no extra troops from the US if congress has it's way. Methinks the American people no longer see the point of winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan and losing young men in the process. This seems to be something that doesn't bother Brown and his sidekicks however and they are still pursuing a policy of talking about negotiating (surrendering ) with the Taliban instead of either destroying them or pulling the troops out before any more die for nothing. Wars are not won by cosying up to the enemy, wars are won when the enemy is destroyed or no longer has enough troops left to fight with. Let the army do what it is trained for without hindrance or recrimination, and the threat from the Taliban will disappear.
Glasgow's miles cleaner 12:00pm on 17 Nov 2009 If Glasgow city council run true to form, the athletes' village will be used to create a brand new slum where any of the benefit army will be proud to reside.
Plotters, quitters and fighters 3:41pm on 16 Nov 2009 Plotters and quitters there may be aplenty, but fighters is another matter. The labour party is not noted for fighting, except when it is to put more cash in their own pockets. Gordon Brown isn't really the problem, the Labour party is the problem. It has, like Attlee, Wilson and Callaghan's governments neither the personnel nor the policies to govern this nation as it deserves.Like them it once again has brought the country to the verge of banktrupcy; there are 8 million people either unemployed or unwilling to work and what few jobs there are snapped up by a growing flood of immigrants from every corner of the globe. Along with those immigrants keen to find work, comes an increasing stream of criminals from all of the world's cesspits and this government sees this as desirable in the name of diversity. The way this government has surrendered Britain's sovereignty to the EU demonstrates the Labour parties fighting qualities,if there was a way to surrender every other part of Briish life , they would surely find it. They may fight to fill their pockets and survive in governmenrt but they most certainly would not fight for the freedom of the people of Britain.
Gordon Brown and the military 2:15pm on 13 Nov 2009 The whole attitude of the British government to this war is questionable. Are we there to stabalise the country, to restore womens' rights or to destroy the Taliban? While the Taliban and other insurgent groups are allowed to roam at will without interference from the army the war is unwinnable. When the army destroys everyone bearing weapons aggressively on sight or removes the weapons, then the war becomes winnable. Winning hearts and minds does not win wars, nor does the questionable application of human rights to the enemy. War is about killing the enemy and there is no other way of achieving victory. If NATO does not have the stomach for this then they must pull out, let the Taliban return, and , if they become a threat to the west in the future then a repeat of the original incursion will quieten them for a few more years. Talking to them is not an option, they hold all the cards and any negotiations will result in a dismal surrender by the west to their demands.
