seeing as Beckham plays in a different position to Owen and Crouch, I don't see your point.

Now if he was in at the expense of Bentley, that would be different.

(Crouch should never be in an England side, neither should Heskey)

I would go further and cull a few more, James (will be too old by the time the WC comes around), Neville (there must be a better RB in the country), Beckham (won't be playing to a high standard by the time the WC comes round), Terry (better CBs wherever you look), Lampard (cannot play with Gerrard, and Gerrard is a better player)

Honestly, the same players for the last umpteen years, it is time to say enough is enough, let a new breed take up the challenge
You Are The Ref answer and suggestions 5:11pm on 16 Jun 2008 Suggeted scenario:

The ball is punted forward from the back, over the central defender's head, but towards the corner flag. The defender turns and legs it after it. The attacking forward, being much smaller and quicker, nips in front of the defender, just before he reaches the ball stops dead in his tracks. The defender cannot stop in time and falls over the attacker, and they both end up in a heap.

Do you:

a) Send off the defender. free kick to the attacking team

b) Free kick to the attacking team, no further action

c) No action, accidental collision caused by the attacker stopping his run in front of another player

d) Free kick to the defending team, no further action.
You Are The Ref special 12:34pm on 11 Jun 2008 There is NOTHING in the offside law that mentions defenders being active if off the pitch.

I wonder if the defender had come back on the pitch and made a clearance off the goal line whether he would have been booked for returning without the ref's permission.

Quite clearly he did not leave the pitch under his own steam, was lying on his back. The goal should have been disallowed for offside.

If the laws say that a defender can play an attacker onside even if he is off the pitch (they don't as far as I can see) then the laws need changing
You Are The Ref #3 5:13pm on 05 Jun 2008 The attacking player cannot challenge the goalkeeper here, as it is an offence to stop him from throwing the ball out. However he can challenge the defender, as long as he does it within the laws of the game.

The 'trick' is plain to see, and it is an attempt to circumvent the backpass law (NOT timewasting), so book the goalkeeper and defender, restart with an indirect free kick to The Netherlands, from where the defender last headed the ball.

Obviously if you are going to penalise the defending team, the first part about the attacker challenging for the ball is a moot point.
