A browser-free Windows 7 5:28pm on 25 Jun 2009 I don't often applaud Microsoft, I've been drinking the Mac user's anti Redmond elixir since 1987.

But I absolutely applaud their decision not to offer a Windows 7 upgrade path in Europe.

The EU is an undemocratic, bureaucratic protection racket and its so called "competition policy" is just another example of pointless rules and diktats which allow hundreds of unelected bureaucrats to give the pretence of working for a living and to ensure they keeps their snouts deep in the taxpayer funded trough.

So well done "the dark side"!
US media's crimes against Web 2.0 12:25pm on 13 Aug 2008 At least Rory Cellan-Jones does attempt to understand NBC's and The Enquirer's motives, even 'though they may be alien, and not a little bewildering to him.

These organisations are funded, not by a forced Poll Tax, but by actually earning the money to pay for the investments in their products.

It's called business Rory, and business' ability to create wealth and earn money is ultimately what pays for the BBC to do whatever it likes. A business that makes no money is one that goes bust; and when they all go bust there will be no one left to pay for BBC extravagancies.
Sky and Universal v iTunes and file-sharers 02:52am on 25 Jul 2008 Why is it that after all these years people still don't understand how iTunes works.

a) iTunes works on any PC or Mac anywhere in the world
b) You can import music from any CD or any mp3 file from another music provider as an mp3, AAC or wav file.
c) tracks bought from the iTunes store are (nearly) always in an encrypted AAC format, but by burning these tracks to CD you can import them back as mp3 and play on any player you like (not just an iPod).
d) you can up the bit rate for any imported track right up to CD quality, if that is what you want.

iTunes is successful because it's simple, beautifully designed, completely integrated and very flexible in the way you organise music.

There are restrictions to the music you buy in the Store, but how many devices does anyone actually need, and anyway, if for some reason you want to play your music on a thousand players, the restrictions are easily overcome.

Universal has been butting heads with Apple for years, but all they succeed in doing is restrict their own market potential.
Unpredictable politics 4:02pm on 12 Jun 2008 When I read about Mr Davis, I thought it worth posting a comment on HYS, saying first how much I admired him and second speculating that the BBC would a) poor scorn on him an b) say how much trouble this would be for the Tories.

Having expressed my thoughts I happened to go to to Nick Robinson's link, and of course immediately discovered that he was way ahead of me.

My advice to Mr Robinson is to tender his own resignation as de facto Labour member for Shepherds Bush, and actually think about what Mr Davis has done and why. You never know Nick you might actually become a better reporter.
