The panel should have should have talked to the million people, apparently young white males in the main, who voted for the BNP and the next million people who might feel pushed to do so and addressed their concerns. Instead they attacked Griffin, and by extension sent the message out that the mainstream isn't interested in listening to the million that already voted BNP.

Our mainstream politicians and the media need to stop the constant negative comments on a) White People b) Young People and c) Men (special note to Harriet Harman) and start listening to their concerns. The fact that those voters feel that a twitching inconstant and contradictory man like Griffin is their best chance to be heard tells you just how alienated our political classes are making them feel.

Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem, Green, UKIP, SNP.....go and engage with them now, or we will all pay a heavy price.
Moving in the right direction 9:11pm on 19 Oct 2009 I am self employed. I take only what cash I need out my business, and I take it as a repayment of (the very substantial) capital that I invested. The post corporation tax profits roll up and are reinvested to replace and grow working capital, there is no point in taking it out and paying another 20% tax (or 30% as it will soon be). Self-cert works well for me and I have never missed a payment in 18 years. I have a very large amount of equity and I will be the only loser unless the market falls by 60% or more from here. No amount of affordability checks will save us if the market falls that much.

Under these new proposals I can't get a mortgage. I don't have 'the right sort of income' If I do want to remortgage to a better lender I will have to switch my income to dividends and pay a shed load of tax rather than redrawing my directors loans. That weakens my business. I am being penalised for being self employed.

Also there has been a vicious recession. Most businesses will post much lower profits, if not losses this year. Lenders will take the lowest of the last three years as your income base in the new FSA imposed world. Which means it will be another three full trading years before any of us self employed folk can borrow.

But of course the FSA, with their nice comfy salaries won't be worried about that. I'm all right jack.
Has he got a Legg to stand on? 09:58am on 13 Oct 2009 I am going to stick my head over the parapet here. For once I agree with Nick Robinson. It is fundamentally unfair to retrospectively apply rules that did not exist. Like it or not, these MPs made gardening and cleaning claims for five years that were approved and paid. They had no opportunity to change or alter their behaviour or expenditure. It is unjust to now ask for that cash back.

This sets a dangerous precedent. How will you feel when Gordon Brown announces that last years tax rate was 90% because that seems fair looking at the situation now? Or your car excise duty is tripled for the last five years even though you paid within the rules. Will you pay up the difference meekly? I didn't think so.

The expenses system was a badly framed and implemented. Imposing arbitrary retrospective rules to punish MPs is not the answer
'Labour's lost it,' says the Sun 00:01am on 30 Sep 2009 The Sun is a bellwether, and it is highly likely to turn on Brown, as that is what the public themselves want to do (refer to recent polling) out of sheer frustration but can't because he just won't call a general election.

Analysis of the speech today reveals that there was absolutely nothing new in it. Just repackaging. Labour have nothing new to say, and have cleaned the pot out and left us with a generational debt burden and a 30% per annum overspend to deal with.

Hopefully the good old 'currant bun' will excoriate them to a point where they surrender the reigns of power and let someone, anyone, get on with trying to salvage something out of the mess for the current and future citizens of this country.
Will he or won't he? 10:10am on 29 Sep 2009 It's all smoke and mirrors. He won't actually SAY on the record that he's offering a debate, but he has used a leak to give the impression that he will. He is trying to have the kudos of appearing to be up for a debate without actually doing it.

Classic Gordon Brown.
No ordinary week for the PM 12:16pm on 26 Sep 2009 So Obama was nice to Gordon and his wife for all to see? so what, it is not the result, but how Brown got there that counts. He lost all dignity during the week.

Sadly this is typical of his government. They always get it wrong, in fact doggedly so, and then occasionally manage it pull everything out of the fire.

It is like driving to a hotel for a romantic weekend, getting lost on the way, having a huge argument with the wife over her map reading skills, running into the back of another car whilst distracted, and finally arriving wondering why she is in a right huff and saying 'but darling, we are here'

What was it Jim Royal would have said 'Victory, .. ............'
Why don't the Conservatives spell out their plans? 11:07pm on 08 Sep 2009 Lets see, just tackling 645 people on the state pay roll shakes 120m from the savings tree. Extrapolate that saving out to the 4 million public sector people and we are talking about really really big savings. I wouldn't knock it.

Every time I have a meeting with the public sector, I come back to my scruffy offices and I feel bad for my private sector employees because there is just no way on earth I can match the working conditions, terms, salaries and hours that the public service get, and yet we all get hammered for taxes at every level to support the public sector gravy train.

There is a new us and them in this country, it cannot be allowed to stand.

Survival but at what price? 10:02pm on 05 Jun 2009 I wonder if anyone in the No. 10 circle ever reads these comments. If they did, they might not be so arrogant as to insist over and over 'ad nauseum Harman' that they know what we think. The chaos of the infighting today, that painful-to-watch press conference, plus the arrogance of the man who insists he is not arrogant. Caroline Flint - what a volte face! Hell hath no fury like a woman with an ego that is so much bigger than her talent. All those unelected cabinet ministers, Lady Kinnock and the entire 6 billion pounds worth of university sector shoved quietly into Mandleson's 'business' portfolio... how did we come to this?
What did the PM say? 4:19pm on 18 May 2009 The Speaker will not allow a debate on this issue is to deny the people of this country their voice. In the current atmosphere that is a very dangerous place to put our democracy.

What does the future hold for Gordon Brown if he refuses the electorate a General Election, and refuses a substantive motion Speaker Martin?
