Welcome to BBC iD 5:03pm on 29 Oct 2009 I think this is great news. The old accounts system was messy and - although it /was/ a unified login - it felt like your actions in different areas of the site were completely unrelated to each other. Hopefully these new accounts, and the BBC's appretiation of their necessity, will allow us to have a truly unified login.

To me, this means a system where you truly feel logged in whenever you are, and where the site has a more consistent feel (like how blogs, programmes and news look similar but h2g2 doesn't).

Anyhow, positive development. Best of luck with it!

Who will ride Google's Wave? 10:28am on 30 Sep 2009 Having used Google Wave, I have to agree that I don't think it'll be a massive winner. Personally, I think one major problem is that the product tries too hard. It's quite a neat little tool, but aspires to be too much. Whilst I was taken in by the functionality at the I/O keynote, actually using it just feels messy.

Also, with the number of updates you get from group messages, the important ones get left behind. Your inbox is full of random stuff you don't want, so you just mark the lot of it as read. Should there be an important message in there than you need to read, it's lost.

Your description of IM on steroids is perfect. You can have an IM-type conversation with people, but the threading system gets very messy very quickly. And the more people you have, the messier it gets; so I suppose Google Wave actively encourages you to be less sociable.

The Facebook fizzle 4:51pm on 28 Jul 2009 And yet, Facebook remains the biggest social network site. Users leave, but they're not going anywhere. Sure, people are joining Twitter, but that's not comparable. They offer totally different services. This is yet more of the BBC trying to promote Twitter and down rivals. Whilst Mr Gates and Ms Stewart leave Facebook, millions of us stay, interact with our friends and enjoy a healthy, sociable atmosphere. If they want to leave their communities by isolating themselves from important discussion and the organisation of events, who cares? Not news, a surprise, or fair.
Music industry v Technology 10:03am on 07 Jul 2009 The word "killjoy" comes to mind. As does the word "slow". Ringtones have been around for years with no problems, why turn on them now? And what do the members of ASCAP think about this? I'd like to know if the composers feel they should be given royalties for their songs not being played...
E3 2009: Predictions 2:49pm on 01 Jun 2009 Darren, you've forgotten about two of the major games we're expecting to see at E3: Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus. These are undoubtedly more important to the gaming community than such things as Halo and Rock Band!
Winners and losers in a tech recession 2:00pm on 24 Apr 2009 Sorry, and "the closure of Geocities". I'm guessing you've got some sort of software error somewhere down the line. Not sure of the language but "echo" and "var" aren't exactly common prose.

Other than that, an interesting report. Nice to see the winners and losers. But where do Google fit into this? Whilst they're obviously a dominant force, have they suffered at all in the recession?
