The PM Glass Box. 5:51pm on 11 Nov 2009 About that "we will only keep your DNA for six years if you are arrested".

Great. How many years are they planning to keep the DNA they take from people they question as witnesses, for example, but don't arrest or charge? They've been known to take DNA from children for the offence of having been in a cafe where a crime has taken place, or seen a fight.

How about the people facing a statutory charge for speeding, whose DNA has been taken in the past, on the basis @we will arrest you for obstructing the police if you don't give it to us"?

Good start that they plan to keep something they were never entitled to in the first place for a mere six years, but isn't it time they got rid of the rest too? And stopped the whole wretched business *before* they leave the database on a train and it is found and misused by some villain?
The new weather forecast. 6:12pm on 12 Oct 2009 It worked very well as far as I was concerned, after I had recovered from an initial burst of laughter.

"We will always take it in the same order, starting in the south-east" he said, or words to that effect, "except obviously if there is some really dramatic weather in say Scotland, in which case that would have to be mentioned first."

So what was the first area he went straight on to mention by name?

Scotland!

A New Yorker of Jewish extraction is not the same as a Bostonian of Westphalian extraction nor as a Sioux nor as a Californian of Mexican extraction nor as an Inuit nor...

A born-again Presbyterian is not the same as a Roman Catholic is not the same as a Quaker is not the same as a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster...

A Democrat is not the same as a Republican...

"The Americans" didn't murder anyone, most of them. They may have failed to prevent people over whom they seem to have no control from organising murders, or even committing murders, but blaming every citizen of the entire country for all decisions made by any citizen of that country is as daft as blaming me for the slave-trade.

See also Deuteronomy 32:35, Psalm 94:1, Hebrews 10:30, and rather a lot reported as having been said by the Christ himself on the subject of taking revenge on "those who despitefully use you". (Matthew 5:44.)

If anyone wants to feel that s/he must be avenged, I would have thought that terminal prostate cancer ought to be *quite* enough to satisfy any need there may be. If s/he wants s/he can think of it as God's vengeance; if the person s/he feels has not been tortured enough was not guilty after all, let him or her then feel appropriate remorse.

Calling for him to be incarcerated until he breathes his last is not in accordance with Christian doctrine, and comes badly from the mouth of anyone purporting to be a Christian. Be vengeful, or be a Christian, but don't claim to be both at the same time: they are not compatible.

And if he was as guilty as sin, how great the merit in forgiving your enemies, even unto seventy times seven (which is four hundred and ninety: more than those who died at Lockerbie). Let the vengeful "Christians" baying for his blood think how good being forgiving instead could make them feel.

Elizabeth Cross. 5:37pm on 19 Aug 2009 Scotch-git, the swastika predates the regime in Germany last century by a fair few hundred years, but it is still impossible now for it to be protrayed (even the wrong way round) without unfortunate association with that regime.

It's a shame, but there you are.

I agree with you that I wouldn't have thought a cross was not used as a symbol before the advent of Christianity -- which nearly went for the fish as its symbol instead, at one point, didn't it?
Elizabeth Cross. 9:38pm on 18 Aug 2009 If my son or my daughter were killed on active service, which is entirely possible, I would feel that my being given a medal would be completely meaningless to me.

As a matter of interest, if someone whose parents are divorced is in question, which of them gets it? Next of kin. And which one is that?
The USA and the NHS. 10:13pm on 17 Aug 2009 If 46 million Americans don't get healthcare because they can't afford to pay for it, I would suggest, mildly, that this is 46 million people who might quite like the NHS or its equivalent. If I break my leg, it's comforting to think that I will be treated by the NHS even if I am unemployed and uninsured.

It's also pleasing to feel that only people who refuse the MMR jab for their children are running the risk of their children getting measles unneccessarily and dying of it, rather than children getting measles and dying of it because their parents can't afford to pay for their innoculations.

That 22,000 quid (or however much it was) that the ad was complaining was all the NHS spent on a cancer patient: well, that's 22,000 quid more than any of the 46 million will have spent on them if they happen to get cancer, isn't it. How evil the NHS is in that comparison.
