I believe Supermarkets probably factor in the money they loose from the increased risk of shoplifting against the gain of less staff servicing more customers.
Self service tills. 9:43pm on 22 Oct 2009 We have them in the US. One of the odd differences in the US supermarket experience is people generally do not pack their own shopping bags. No idea why not it just drags on the checkout time. Therefore I think the self service checkouts are much quicker. I also do not miss the small talk with the check out person.

I have had the "UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA" area issue a few times but usually it just goes away if I keep scanning.

Shhhhhhhhhhh! 6:10pm on 03 Aug 2009 I get pretty upset about anti social behavour. My wife always tells me I should just let it go and expect it from people. I think sometimes I would be happier if I took her advice.

It is true if you mention rudeness these days people somehow think you are at fault. We spoke to these two old guys in a restaurant who had their phone on speaker. They came over and threw their phone at us telling us to turn the speaker off. I told them just to take it outside. They spent the rest of the meal loudly bad mouthing us. I finally went up to them if they had an issue? They said no and just mumbled and gave us looks.

I put it down to the culture of how nothing is our fault and general social isolation. If people just took the time to say sorry when they did something wrong it would be a different place. I cut someone up the other day and we ended up going to the say place. I went up and apologised for my lack of concentration earlier. The guy just looked at me bemused.
Taking the political mood 9:10pm on 29 Apr 2009 The government stopped listening to people along time ago. Iraq, ID cards, Freedom on information act, MP expenses are all examples where they thought they knew best. Thank god for the House of Lords (never thought I would say that). They stopped/slowed down some of the more crazy schemes.

The simple issue is in UK politics people remain in power too long. The same thing happened to Thatcher and Conservatives. There should be term limits so that you can only be a member of the government for two terms and then you have to go to the back benches.

Personally I think this belongs in the "and finally" section of News At Ten. Technical mistakes happen.

Guess the US still has a lot of hurdles to overcome.
It will be President Obama. 06:53am on 05 Nov 2008 I am a ex-pat who lives in Castro in San Francisco it is a crazy night. There are four Helicopters overhead covering the parties that are going on. It reminds me of past Castro Halloween parties.

I have been amazed at the sheer energy of this election day. On my ride home all I could hear on the train was people asking each other if they voted. Even at work people had their "I voted" stickers on.

Everyone in San Francisco has their fingers crossed that Prop 8, the California ban on same sex marriage will fail. Currently it is not looking so good.

BTW I am a married straight man with two kids. I feel no one should use the law to take someones freedoms away. If I can get married so should everyone.

I think it is great we entered a UK team. We should do this in all sports. We have the same money (Pound Sterling), the same passports, We even drive on the same side of the road.

Can you imagine if Scotland and England supporters could put their feelings to one side and we had a UK football team? It would be amazing.

If you replace Australian with British and Britain with any country you like you would get every comment every posted after England/UK has failed to do well at a sporting event.

I nearly wet myself with the line "We need an immediate inquiry". It sounds so British.

BTW the whole topic should be renamed "The Olympics, bringing countries together" - lol.
