Should politicians be forced to give yes/no answers? 10:32pm on 12 Oct 2009 Maybe not yes/no, but I'd suggest a 30 second time limit, and if they haven't address the question directly by then, the questioner can cut them off. Repetition, Deviation, and to a lesser extent Hesitation would all be stamped upon. Further questions start, like "Just A Minute", with the previous comments already counted, so new attempts to bluster just result in cutting them off sooner.

Politicians can then at least have time to express their view of the issue, briefly, before they are forced onto the point or else be cut off.
Anyone who cannot understand the general principles of "Just A Minute" don't deserve to be in Parliament

For politicians who refuse to answer - just broadcast the questions that they refuse to have answered on air.
The new weather forecast. 6:18pm on 12 Oct 2009 I've just popped in to say Great! - for a change I know what the weather will be tomorrow in my area. I noticed, unlike the shipping forecast, that two areas had the same weather tonight, but then the forecast bifurcated for tomorrows weather - that's fine for me, but perhaps had better be flagged up?

Much though Kathy C deserves credit for her game, I should add that in episode 6 of Cabin Pressure, March this year (Tuesday at 18:30), they played a game of

Books whos titles are more interesting with the last letter missing.

An example was A dance to the music of Tim.

Cabin Pressure is actually better than it first sounded (it works better on hearing second or third time).

R4 minus one letter of course has less scope than all published books, but is balanced by removing one letter from the title, not just the last letter.

Actually, I've played this game with phrases for years, sometimes intentionally. I once referred to Chris Evans as a member of the g[l]iterati

I was temporarily successful in that (but not in not having the CPZ in the first place). New administration at the council removed it again.

I've enjoyed the comments about the Brummie councillor (and I've lived there for some years) dropping his aitches (no leading "h" in aitch, Screamingmuldoon (62)) In the place name he represents and how would the road signs indicate that. "Kings Eath"?

Being the boring person that deepthought is, there was a typo - Camb is a city by Royal Statute in 1952 (note the missing "t" in the original). How much more could be milked from the Royal Statue line? Little, I suspect.

There are Royal Statues, usually holding chair legs, around the place, most notably above Trinity Great Gate (statue of its founder Henry VIII). Before you all fall asleep from Boredom, the great screen in King's Chapel (on which the organ is mounted), was also provided by the same said Henry VIII, (who sponsored the finishing of the chapel, including the fan vaulting) in a different mood - early joy of relationship with the younger Boleyn girl ("H" and "B" are intertwined in a motif).

Interesting prog today at 15:45, Bryn Tervyl on VW's Fantasia on Christmas Carols. Now I have sung this, so know it quite well. Recommend a "listen again". I think Chris probably will know the work of VW and Sharp on the collection of carols, folk dances etc in the 190xs. That saved "The Sussex Carol", and the "Handkerchief dance" (aka "Country Gardens") to name one piece each saved and which we now treasure.

Do we have the same edition of the Oxford Book of Carols - we seem to have read the same preface.

It is true that some Hymns have taken on the mantle of Carols, although in the case of While Shepherds Watched, I don't mind (I love the way the punctuation crosses the lines, endless scope for minor changes in meaning....). The alternative tune (I've forgotten the name) is also a delight in itself, far more "carol" in feel, however venerable the current "standard" tune is (at least, in the S of England, the current standard tune). I suppose the excuse given above is why *some* of the xmas hymns turn up in the Ox book of Carols.

Last night I was taking the Carol to be originating from non-Church use, although in the Adam example, there is no known "original" tune, so there are various modern tunes used. Hymns would have been for church use from the start, however popular they have since become. A simple minded division, true, I was not expecting to enter a learned discussion on the topic at that time of the night!.

Kings (other colleges are also available) also do Advent carol services, on Advent Sunday. The music is less well known, partly as strictly advent carols are not that well known. I think John's gets broadcast on occasion.

As I recall, the 9L&C was based upon a service at Thuro Cathedral (Cornwall, as I appear to have mis-spelt the town) a few years earlier, and adopted by King's College C. I'm sure they acknowledge the fore-runner, even if it is now accepted to be a KC thing.

For those who are fussed about it, "Carols" are not the same as "Christmas Hymns". So "O Come", or "Hark!"... are not Carols. Sussex Carol, and Adam lay y'bounden, for example (used yesterday), are.
This just in... 00:23am on 25 Dec 2008 Well, Stevie C, as we never called him to his face, has been doing this gig for at least 25 years now, as he was well established at the aforesaid 25 year ago when I was handed a ticket to this service (it's not a ticket event, so don't ask) half an hour before kick-off.

The real 9 L&C is nothing like the TV show, pre-recorded a couple of days before. The chapel looks really odd with all the search-lights on the windows (to show them off for the TV - and one reason why the TV version is pre-recorded).

How SC survived a scandal a few years ago - he kept this pre-eminent post, but lost some minor ones (rather, as one might expect, the other way around) is one of those cantab mysteries...
