The major retailers have all been beating up suppliers to reduce packaging weight over the past couple of years. But, there is only so much that can be done to reduce packaging AND maintain shelf-life.
If you really want to make an impact on packaging and food miles - buy locally and accept that you'll only get 3 or 4 days life on your meat or dairy products that have 1 week plus from the supermarket.
Food for thought. 11:02pm on 10 Aug 2009 mittfh "How about introducing a system whereby instead of farmers having exclusive contracts with a single supermarket, they auction off their produce to the highest bidder?"

Because, in most instances, the contract is not between the farmer and the supermarket, but between farmer and packer/processor and then on to the supermarket.
Also, the farmer has to weigh up the pros and cons of hanging on for a better price (which may not materialise due to supply/demand) or knowing what he will realise from entering into a contract with a processor/packer and therefore have some certainty upon which to budget.
The other advantage of entering into an arrangement with a processor/packer is that, in the main, any risk of not being able to balance supply to demand (large vs small fruit, steaks vs forequarter cuts vs trim) is left to the packer to deal with.
Watch out for rump steak and lamb loin promotions in a retailer near you soon as the rest of the carcass goes to burgers, steaks and shish kebab!

It's seriously costly to any supplier of the sooopermarkits.
By the way, did you know that BOGOFs only have a 95% redemption rate at best? Some people really only want/need one pack.....
