From optimism to pessimism 1:56pm on 12 Feb 2009 i am sick to death of this whole affair.

can we not line up the BOE, HMG and all the bosses against a wall and have at them.

Its not even the fact that they have screwed up the economy that winds me up, its the fact they are still doing it.

Im sure all posters on this site will be very pleased to here im going to find a nice piece of canada to call my own, cos this country is led by complete and utter morons.

so i shall bother you no more.

p.s. If you ever do kick these walking lumps of lard out of power i shall be very happy to return. until then enjoy the depression, the recovery will be hell.

well i would rather see exactly the opposite, so how are we going to resolve this difference in opinion.

i know we live in a democratically elected country, so lets have a public debate, maybe have it mentioned in apolitical parties manifesto before a general election.
You know the way the system is meant to work, because the thing is Mr Reeves i think i must have been asleep for the last ten years, because i dont recall any elected party be they local or national, mentioning in their manifesto that they would be bringing in cctv as a measure to fight crime instead of i dunno, duh, policemen and women.
Men who face domestic abuse 12:57pm on 12 Feb 2009 further to my previous comment iw ould like to say that i did have an abusive partner.

The first reaction i had was shock, i had no experience to draw on in how to deal with this.

On the one hand i had been taught never to hit a woman and on the other, this person who supposedly loved me was screaming maniacally at me saying she was going to kill me.

eventually after several outbursts (followed by profound apologies, tears threats of never seeing my son again ets) i called the police after being threatened with a knife,and only after she hit my 2 year old son at the time, big mistake. I was arrested, charged, released on conditional bail and refused "permision" to return to my home.

inherent bias, i should say so.

I left my former partner soon after, i still have a strong relationship with my son, and the only advise i can give to any man in a similar situation is leave immediately and without hesitation.
Men who face domestic abuse 12:44pm on 12 Feb 2009 Surely this is actually about women wishing to be portrayed as victims.

Although women have equal rights in our society we still hear so many reports about how women are treated unfairly.

Women get made redundant more than men, women get paid less than men, etc, etc we all know them by now.

In actual fact these stories are not true in the context of equality, but are rather social issues regarding the sort of work women CHOOSE to do in general.

Part time, low skilled and low paid work to fit in with the lifestyle they choose.

Secondly there is an inherent bias in this country towards the mother role model and against the father figure, how many adverts portray men as buffoons or idiots. How many jokes are made at the expense of men but if used in the same context at women would be described as sexist.

Men are the new women, we can be marginalised, abused, have our rights taken away and no one, not the media, not parlianment and certainly not the police bat an eyelid.

I personally do not object to women having the same opportunity as men, but along with rights come responsabilities and not behaving like a victim is one responsability that women seem unable to take on board.
Daniels sacrifices bonus 12:41pm on 11 Feb 2009 Are we actually angry at these bank bosses?
Or is it the government we are angry at?

I for one could not give a fig if some bonuses are paid to bank bosses and their rank and file staff.

I am however very angry indeed at this government.

1. When the government gave the banks this money, why did it not ensure that the money would actually be used to increase borrowing rather than underline the banks liquid assets?

As my albeit limited financial understanding goes, the money we poured in was not meant to "save" the banks, despite Gordo the greats protestations, but was in fact to act as a "financial stimulus package".

I was against this at the time, not on a ideological basis, but because i knew this government would mess it up.

2. Why have this government not lowered income tax rates? If you are going to punish tax payers down the line to pay for all this borrowing to pay off the banks, surely you should at least reward them in the hard times by lowering income tax at the very least. God knows we are being hit every which way and the joke of lowering VAT now so you can increase it in a years time, above its original rate is pure Labourian genius.

We are tough on wealth, tough on the causes is wealth.

3. Stop hitting savers. I understand politically the government needs to try and lower interest rates to keep all those mortgage holders on side. However punishing savers whilst you do this is inequitable. As usual this government is trying to crack a walnut with a sledgehammer by putting pressure on the BOE to lower interest rates.

4. Quantitive Easing. Yes, a rose by any other name would still be bankrupting the country with high inflation. Increase the money supply at your peril, as sure as labour leads to poorly drafted legislation, high inflation leads to civil unrest, despotic governments and warfare.
Encourage this course of action, Gordo the great and be damned.

I have an aquaintance whos wife needed to obtain a visa form th US embassy in London.
Whilst she was in the embassy, this chap was ambling around Grovesnor Square, which i believe is still part of the Uk taking photographs.

cue arrival of armed UK policeman sans pepper spray but with mp5 and body armour.

armed policeman " what are you doing"

my friend " my wifes in the US embassy and im just passing the time until she comes out"

AP " what are you photographing?"

MF " nothing in particular just this and that as i say im just passing the time"

AP " we dont like you doing that"
Unfair? We may have to hope so 12:50pm on 10 Feb 2009 I was reading a history of the netherlands in the c18th, (not as dull as it sounds), and a quote from John Adams, (the future president and at that time ambassador to the Netherlands), struck me as quite aposite.

Im afraid i cant quote it for other contributors, but it gives a stark illustration and warning of Britains future.

As im sure a lot of contributors will be aware, the Dutch created a trading empire in the c16th and c17th after a bloody war of independence with the Spanish. However by the time of the mid c18th the Netherlands had stagnated to a severe extent, This, John adams subscribed, was because they had put Trade (read investment banking) above everything else, defence of empire, strategic alliances, the political system and regulations.

This is modern Britain, unless we are prepared to learn from history we will suffer the same (in proportion) result.

Loss of trading partners, (as opposed to empire), loss of sovereignty ( the dutch empire was subsumed into the french empire and called "the batavian republic"), loss of self respect and apathy and ignorance will rule.

There must be a better solution to the current crisis than is posited by the BOE and HMG. We are rewarding mediocrity and punishing rectitude and moral courage.
People who stood against the prevailing moral quagmire are being punished to reward people who benefitted from the self same fetid slime.

The choice we are being given is no choice at all, and i for one want the option to stop this government before we reach the tipping point. I guarantee printing more money either through "quantitive Easing" or some other misuse of the English language will lead us to disaster.

This is what happens when we vote a government in who have no respect for history.
Are Barclays' profits irrelevant? 12:29pm on 09 Feb 2009 Chaos theory would suggest that individual banks will do very well in the short term.

As the system fails variations in outcome will increase for individuals, this applies to the current economic situation and to global warming, we cannot use individual events as guides to trends.

Unfortunately for us all the underlying trend is still downward. I would expect Barclays to have very bad figures later on this year and would humbly suggest people not to assume this is the trigger for an upturn event.
Worst of days 09:46am on 09 Feb 2009 firstly, i would just like to give all the Australian people affected by this horrible event my sympathies.

Its very difficult for the average Brit to comprehend the magnitude of a eucalpt bush fire, so thanks to exlibertatrian for his graphic and frightening explanation.

People also should perhaps be aware that a bush fire creates its own micro climate of very high temperature and wind speed that is almost silent until its upon you, add in to that very poor visibility caused by smoke , heat haze and dust and it is no wonder that some poor sods are caught out.

As i have mentioned previously i have seen the roar of a bush fire and will be glad to never see it again, but the loss of life this time is truely horrendous and not to be compared with my experience, which was on a much smaller scale.

Once again my deepest condolences to Australia in this very bad time.
Bonus buck stops with Brown 12:41pm on 06 Feb 2009 I have nothing to add to the morality issue re banking industry bonuses in the current climate as most bloggers on this thread have covered it pretty thoroughly.

However as with most issues i like to come from a historical and political perspective.
What message will awarding bonuses to the bankrupt banking industry send to the general populace?
I suspect the message will be that the political and business elite treat the citizenry of this country with contempt.

That being the case how long will it be before we do indeed revolt?
When i first started posting blogs on this and other sites i raised the spectre of revolution about 9months ago rather flippantly. However the further down this road we have come the more i believe there will be a revolution in the UK, there are several reasons behind this and i will try to defend my belief by illustrating them.

The september 11th attack liberated this government to behave in a repressive way rasing the spectre of thousands of Muslims all bent on killing us. This allowed them to declare 2 illegal wars and bring in some very nasty anti terrorist legislation. This is important because natural left wingers like myself are appalled at the behaviour of HMG.

Moslems themselves have been alienated by the very same issue and their reaction to this has meant that we have the BNP trying to gain terrirtory in areas with high concentrations of muslims.

Immigrant workers are also a very large issue on the doorsteps of working class areas, one that HMG have been unwiling or unable to recognise until very recently, this again has created great resentment.

Scottish and Welsh devolution has created a situation where English taxpayers have seen their tax receipts allocated to devolved governments who are able to provide better services for their constituents than the Taxpayers who fund them, Politically not very clever.

Finally savers are seeing their money poured down the drain to fund more money for borrowers, expedient form a political viewpoint perhaps, but it does not leave a nice taste in the mouth. I also ask how many dreams are being destroyed by the BOE actions?

There are perhaps other issues that are too subtle for me to have picked up on.

The result of this is we have a resentful populace who are disconnected from their rulers, who are suffering because of the policies of these same people.

Who will come up with the British "let them eat cake" i wonder, and could it be this issue that leads to manning of the barricades.

I dont know, and i do hope not but this government have proved to be utterly inept in dealing with this situation and i would suggest tread very,very carefully.
