Barca - as far as I am aware - paid off their 60 million debt with the massive amount of money the won last season with the league title, champs league and kings cup. If it wasnt all the debt, it was at least the loan they had on their stadium. How many UK clubs can claim they own their stadium 100% ?

If he continues his current form, he will be looking at 20 goals or more this season.

Next season will see more of the same from him.

Capello must pick him if he continues in his current form.
England cannot replace Rooney 12:25pm on 14 Oct 2009 How can you dismiss Darren Bent as "not an international class striker" ? The man plays in the best league in the world, against the best players, and has scored more goals than Rooney so far!

What does the man have to do, apart from be the highest scoring english striker in the premier league?

I see Bent as the perfect back-up for Rooney. Both players run their legs off for their clubs, score goals, get back to win the ball, chase players/the ball down all over the pitch and are unselfish when they need to be.

Bent is the only other english striker who could replace Rooney. Crouch, Heskey, Cole and others have a completely different style (Heskey and Crouch don't have any style at all....).

Rooney is world class, and I would love to see him play for Sunderland. But to say "no player comes near him" is a ridiculous statement. Darren Bent does. He scored 17 goals for Spurs last season under a manager who hated him, while making 33 appearances (not all of them starting the game). Look at his goal ratio for Charlton, and now for Sunderland and tell me he isnt a world class striker.

If this was a school playground full of 12 year olds I'd be chanting:

Phil and Rooney sitting up a tree......

Sorry Phil, but I truly believe you have Rooney shaped blinkers on. He may be thought of as the best english striker at the moment, but Bent really isnt too far behind, and would do a fantastic job in his (Rooney's) place.

The fact that Cappelo hasnt given Bent a call up so he can prove his is up to the job, despite the fact we have already qualified, shows a short-sightedness I didnt think Capello had.

Bent not striking fear into the hearts of world class defenders? Try telling that to Rio Ferdinad, the Liverpool defenders coming up to the SoL on saturday and every other defender currently in the premier league.

Your love for rooney and conviction he is the only world class english striker is sweet and touching on one hand, and completely blinkered and short sighted on the other (mind you, they always say that love is blind....).

Is this true? I thought so when Capello started out as England manager. But for a manager that supposedly picks players based on form, why does he leave Bent out, and give Heskey (who is lucky top get 30 mins of football per match at Villa) a place?

Unforetunatly Ferdinand, as you mention, doesnt really have any competition for his place. I hope that changes over the next 6 months before the WC starts.
Raving Roy on borrowed time? 1:00pm on 06 Oct 2009 My god, another person blaming ManU's performance on their players playing badly, rather than Sunderland Player's playing them off the park. ManU's players, regardless of overall possesion (look at the tackles completed stats), couldnt cope with a Sunderland side who were chasing them down, putting pressure on them and not giving them any space. Cana and Cattermole dominated the midfield.

It was a fantastic performance by our players, and credit should be given where it is earned.

I honestly don't know if Sunderland's performance against ManU will set the standard, or if its a one off - but even if we play at 70% of level we did on saturday for the rest of the season we should still finish in a strong mid-table position.

Anyway, rant over.

BTW, your comments on RK made me chuckle. Glad that he got us promoted, but equally glad that he left us.

If you want facts, do not read a blog. Scientific Papers/Journals might be more to your flavour.

and the beckham critics have nothing to lose anyway. if this proves that beckham is no longer good enough then capello wont pick him. If it proves the opposite then they will have nothing to complain about.

ummm, i beg to differ.

Every attack by Platini is to do with foreigners. Foreign investors, foreign players.... he'll be blaming the Chinese janitors next.

its just an easy target, that he knows will get a reaction from the supporter in the UK.

besides, u picked out one sentence in my comments. if you read them completely you are saying the same as me. The problem is not the foreign owners, its owners in general that borrow against the club and not themselves.

Arsenals debt is manageable/sustainable. Newcastle's is now, thanks to Ashley, and so is Sunderland's due to the irish consortium.
Manchester and Liverpool have debt taken out against them, see #20 comment, that amounts to massive amounts that could possibly cause them serious problems. what i proposed is that money borrowed against the club should be limited to 40% of their equity, the rest should be taken on by whoever owns them.
e.g. if SAFC's equity/assets is worth 200 million, then the debt should be limited to 80 million. so if the owners wanted to build a new academy for 120 million, the owners could borrow 80 million against the club, but would need to stump up 40 million themselves.
