Tangled in the Web 3:49pm on 12 Oct 2009 The proof that technology isn't your strong point isn't when it takes you ages to set the computer up, but when you don't realise there's a thousand other internet streams and programmes showing the same match for free - and not illegally.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would pay to watch a dead rubber on a computer screen.

The problem has been that as soon as the first wicket falls, it's gone quickly downhill. If Ravi's in the opening partnership he'll benefit from Strauss' calming influence and last longer... and when he does fall, Cook has the right technique and understanding with Strauss to stay at the crease for a while and keep the boat steady.

But I wonder, does the fact that it will have just hosted the Olympics count against it (or indeed, in its favour?) I'm sure it'll be in some people's minds - you know, the whole 'spread the wealth' thing. I doubt voters block out everything but world cups when they consider these things.

European game puts South America in shade 1:13pm on 23 Sep 2008 Tim, as with other comments here, your attention to smaller, niche, grassroots elements of football is always a pleasure to read, if only to get away from the hyperbole surrounding the premier league every day, including the frustratingly one-dimensional contributions of some of your less erudite colleagues.

Here's a question which follows on from this: I am a big fan of Italian football, primarily because I was brought up following it. As far as popularity is concerned, the Serie A is now unquestionably the third or fourth best league in Europe, yet if you see past the corruption, violence, racism and laziness that have blighted it over recent years there is still a level of technical ability, drama and love for the finer aspects of the game that, in my view, make it utterly fascinating. I see parallels with this in South American football - so-called football fans from around the world tend not to see past the infrastructural and corporate inadequacies and the lack of money being pumped into a league when judging it. Would you agree that, on a pure footballing level, these leagues should be seen in a different light?

Time for Capello to deliver 4:30pm on 04 Sep 2008 I'm so glad to see that the general mood in the comments is one of positive realism. England didn't qualify for the last major tournament and deservedly so - that's the current status quo. Achieving anything above that next time around would be marvellous.

Phil, you simply can't declare that England should get a point at Croatia, because Croatia are favorites to win twice over - as the better team and as the home team. A point would a brilliant overachievement.

The expectation for this trip should be three points and two good showings. Anything more is a step above this team's current worth.
