NHS at 60 - A picture of health 7:36pm on 10 Jun 2008 I agree with sofarnogood. The psychiatric services have been badly neglected. I think that Care in the community is suitable for many, but not for all those with severe and enduring mental illness. There are far too many people in prison who suffer from severe mental illness, and often do not get adquate treatement, which improves their condition although it does not cure it. These ilnesses affect nt only the patient, but the family(if they have one) many are left to sleeprough. I am distinguishing them from the drug takers and alcoholics who need different treatment and care. I would also include the families of these unfortunate people. Mental illness can often break up the family. The Government propooses to spend a gret deal of money on new prisons, although I believe) they only have money for the sites. Would it not be wiser to spend the money on psychiatric hospitals and other places of safety for these patients? On the training of more psychiatric trained staff, and support for the familes. Nobody asks to be mentally ill, it is their great misfortune.
Gordon, the Government and Everything 3:46pm on 02 Jun 2008 I think we should have more faith in the Police. If there is any need to continue questioning for more than 28 days I believe they can get the permission of a Magistrate who should have the evidence before him/her. If I am in error, then I think this would be peferrable to just continue to keeping someone in custody. This information should be given to the suspect as part of their rights when they are taken into custody. If the have nothing to hide they should have nothing to fear. However I think it is important that any advocate who is allocated should have good knowledge of their native language, if they are not resident British, and also be independent from previous contact with the suspect.
Oil shocks 2:43pm on 30 May 2008 People who are disabled and unable to afford a car, unable to use public transport because of their disabiity, and cannot afford taxi fares will be particularly hard hit, and socially isolated.
Did Mary Whitehouse have a point? 1:15pm on 28 May 2008 I consider there is too much violence shown on TV. However the news bulletings with which we keep in touch with the world is full of violence. The main difference is between natural disasters which arouse concern and compassion, and some of the plays etc. which children and young people often watch unsupervised, and which little ones take as real.
Also there has been a great break up of family life with the break up of marriages and partnerships which cause a great deal of confusion and unhappiness in the minds of young children. they also show a lack of morals and ethics which lower the standards of society in general.
