The NHS: At What Cost? 11:13am on 28 Jul 2009 Money can be saved in all sections of the Health Service. The large severence packages including pensions for senior posts, these contracts should be re-drafted, especially in cases of under-performance, negligence and misconduct. My wife is a Senior Nurse and comments on how cleaning standards on Wards could be further improved by bringing private cleaning contracts back under Ward control. Efficency savings would mean trained nurses could devote more of their time nursing patients instead of cleaning areas missed by private cleaners and imroving hygene. Money can also be saved on many non urgent care areas such as cosmetic surgery and fertilisation procedures where these could form part of a private medical insurance. Health tourism is also a large drain on the NHS nationally. The biggest savings however could be in the non medical mid-management areas of Trusts where administrative jobs could be incorporated by Matrons and Ward Sisters such as Bed Managers who do not work weekends so Ward Managers do it anyway. However a big mistake would be to cut Nursing and Doctors posts, since they already work portions of their day unpaid - should they work strictly to contract, then the Health Service will suffer greatly. Finally, how we look at funding GP surgeries and Health Centres needs urgent attention, efficiencies and money go hand in hand, and whilst our GP's do an excellent job, they are let down by Civil Servants who operate in committee's and have only vague understanding of how things work day to day in a GP practice.
Fuel for the inquest 12:54pm on 02 May 2008 After listening to the Labour Politicians on the news media vowing to listen to the electorate after the disastrous local election results, I wander why they were'nt listening much earlier? Even more disconcertingly they seem to think kind words and sympathy (not actions) are going to sedate the British public into giving them a second chance. Lets just recap the areas where Gordon Brown has had a hand in hitting public pockets hard, its called Taxation.
1 Council Tax 2 Fuel Tax 3 Road Tax 4 Insurance Tax (up from 2.5% to 17.5%) 5 Pay Awards not paid in full (Police, Nurses etc.) 6 Using Taxpayers money (£100Bil) to Bail out Northern Rock - Further £50 Billion to bail out Banks - who caused our collective misery. Not to mention the loss of personal data by the Inland Revenue, and the DVLA. 7 Stealth taxes - for the last 11 years Mr Brown has plundered all our pockets, including our Pensions, hidden taxes such as non reclaimable VAT, abolishing Married persons alowance, flight and departure taxes. Mr Brown has a great deal to answer for at a time when MP's allowances are deemed un-accountable to the taxpayer by the Labour Speaker. The Great British public have just democratically put the Governement on notice, we are YOUR BOSS, and we have had enough !!
