Without alonso/gerrard/torres I would say liverpool are almost underdogs against half the league or at least 70% certain of drawing.

1) no one outside of the roughly "commonwealth" nations cares about cricket (which is about as athletic as darts or snooker) or the various forms of egg-chasing.

2) every host nation does well at their [insert sporting event here], no one should have expected a repeat of the sydney medal haul

Capello knows how to win and Beckham wants to be involved in South Africa 2010. The fear of watching England lift a world cup without him must keep him up at night.

I say "presure" because cranky old alpha males don't give a monkeys what anyone thinks, so it's not really pressure in truth.

Nowadays strikers cover as much ground as midfielders and are as imposing as centre becks - if not in height then at least in brute strength.

Pennant is unintelligent and lacks quality, Benayoun is showing himself to be physically very limited. Rafa places too much emphasis on his "intelligence". Babel will never turn into the player everyone thinks he will, he lacks a good touch and composure.

The problem is Liverpool had massive success with the 4-2-3-1 partly due to Gerrard in the hole and the presence of mascherano. I don't think we'll see them startng the league like this partly as Mascherano is in Beijing and Keane may start behind Torres so it is an unknown at this point.

if all you have to do was play the holding midfield role well and not score or get any assists to be player of he tournament then I think I can see where people are going wrong with negative football.

Thankfully UEFA are more enlightened and realised Xavi's huge influence. I think I will avoid these discussions from now on forever - most of you are a bit "special".
