Will South Africa 2010 produce a new Pele? 11:07am on 24 Nov 2009 Blimey Tim, talk about hard to please. I know you're a purist but surely you can't judge a World Cup based JUST on the amount of free flowing, so-called 'proper' football (although I'd like to know who decided what constitutes 'proper' football). What about the excitement of the games, quality of the goals, greatness of the individual players, or underdogs coming up trumps? All World Cups since 86 have had all these so how you can describe them as mediocre or poor is beyond me.

I'm too young to remember 1986 it must have been a phenomenon of a tournament for you describe others since as poor or mediocre. I don't remember watching Romania-Argentina or Germany-Bulgaria in 94, Zidane in 98, or Argentinas goal against Serbia in 06 and thinking 'this is mediocre'. If your standards are that high then I have a feeling you will once again be disappointed next summer.
My (brief) England career 3:44pm on 20 Nov 2009 I'm not a massive fan of Keegan as a manager but I thought he was quite unlucky as a manager of England in that he had a very poor selction of players to pick from, compared to before and since. Apart from Scholes, Shearer and Owen we didn't really have anyone of top class. The likes of Ince, Adams, Seaman & Pearce were past their best and Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand etc were young and way before their prime. He was forced to pick players like Nick Barmby, Dennis Wise and Tim Sherwood who wouldn't get near the England squad today.

So it was a penalty? For what exactly? If no contact was made (which it clearly wasn't) then you're basically punishing Carsley for being in a certain part of the pitch at a certain time. I must have been in a cave the day they passed that rule. 10 other Birmingham players were also on the pitch at that time and made equal contact with Ngog that Carsley did. Should they have been sent off too?

Its a stupid argument saying that Morgan should get away with elbowing Hume because usually an elbow doesn't cause serious injury. When someone drink drives, most of the time they won't kill someone, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be sererely punished the one time they do.

If you don't want to hurt someone, don't throw an elbow. If you do and seriously injure someone, you should be man enough to face up to it.

So if a drunk driver crashes and kills a group of people in another car he should be punished the same as a drunk driver who crashes into a lamppost injuring nobody?

If a player elbows another and seriously injures them then they have to face the consequences. Its all very well having 'hard men' in the game, making crunching tackles etc, its very British and we seem to love them, but elbowing somebody when they don't expect it is pure cowardness and nothing to do with football.

When did I say Englands record was impressive? It isn't for a country of our size and population. Just thought it was odd you harking on about every single tournament when in all but one of them (94, when you pretty much had an English IX anyway) England were equal to or better than Ireland. Bit rich writing an essay about our poor record, thats all fella. Anyway, this is massively off topic and I hope your anti-England tirade was only because of the numpty Mike_Naylor (who doesn't represent England fans, and who I also had a go at in an earlier comment) and that you don't hate us that much. I happen to like Ireland, mainly cos most of your fans arn't as obsessed with hating England as much as the Scots and Welsh seem to be.

Anyways, good luck in qualifying, genuinely hope you guys make it to South Africa (hopefully by beating France in a play-off!)

Great knowledge of Irish football mate - Ireland were knocked out of World Cup 02 in the SECOND ROUND by Spain. Spain were then knocked out in the quarters by the mighty South Korea.

You know as well as I do you'd swap Irelands records in tournaments with Englands, even though England have't exactly pulled up many trees.
Maradona singing in the rain 5:41pm on 12 Oct 2009 Comment 69 Mike_Naylor - You fail to understand international football, or the concept of competition in general if you think that players do not wish to play for their countries if they don't have a chance of winning the tournament. If that was the case you'd have the World Cup with just about 6 teams in it! If Ireland qualify and get to say the semi finals beating a couple of big teams along the way (which is possible - look at South Korea, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria and the like in recent World Cups) then their players will be heros in Ireland for all of time. That is something money simply cannot buy and what people like yourself and Stephen Ireland fail to understand.

Also my comment about England fans travelling 'half way round the world' to South Sfrica seems to have caused abit of a geographical debate so let me just say that i meant it as a figure of speech. The point I was making is that they ain't just hopping over the channel to France or Germany and so for 40,000 (if thats how many go) to go all the way to South Africa shows that the World Cup and international football is very much alive and kicking, contrary to when the M W Goble and Stephen Ireland think.

Couldn't have put it better myself, best comment I've read on here for a long time. International football is such a great equaliser because, unlike just about everything else in football right now, natutral talent cannot be bought.

I hope that Stephen Ireland realises what he is missing next summer if (hopefully when) Rep of Ireland are out in South Africa and he is driving around Manchester in his flash car.
