Can Blazevic work his magic for Bosnia? 5:38pm on 11 Nov 2009 I really hope Bosnia qualify.
1. If they do manage to beat Portugal, they will have shown sufficient quality to contribute to the World Cup (there are enough 'novelty nations' as it is)

2. It would be amusing to see Ronaldo cry at the prospect of not going to the World Cup.

3. Always nice to see debutants at the World Cup and not just the old order - provided they contribute to the tournament and cause a few upsets.

4. Yes, it would give the torn nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina some much needed pride. Sadly, most players from Republika Srbska and (Croatian) Herzegovina choose to represent Serbia and Croatia respectively. This may now change with Blazevic - a Croat - as coach. Hopefully this will be his legacy, the unification of Bosnia in sport.

5. Off-topic, but I really hope North Korea get drawn against the USA and thrash them 5-0.
Spurs learn silence is golden 1:36pm on 01 Nov 2009 Spurs are vastly improved over last season, but they lack consistency. They might go out and beat Liverpool or Chelsea and get a footballing lesson from Arsenal or United the next week. The defeat at home to Stoke highlighted this inconsistency; you will see a better Spurs outfit when Luka Modric returns
Anfield's day of destiny 06:35am on 24 Oct 2009 United might be playing unspectacular football, but they sit at the top of the pile. Rooney is scoring goals and finally Berbatov is looking like a good signing. They do look a bit frail at the back, though. However, in Evans, Vidic and Ferdinand, and with VDS back, I'm sure that frailty is going to be corrected.

The games against Spurs and Stoke did show that the team can play some devastating football.
Anfield's day of destiny 5:04pm on 23 Oct 2009 Fair play to the Spirit of Shankly protest. Liverpool is more than a club, it is a cultural icon of Liverpool and English football. It should not be a monetary toy of investors.

It is about time the plastics (around 70% of the population) woke up, started believing in real values, eating real food and drinking real ale. The Revolution is nigh, may the best team win on Sunday, and may that team be United.

Football is a game for everyone, not just the super rich. Unfortunately it is now controlled by the super-rich. People like Abramovich, Usmanov, The Glazers are a cancer of football, it is time they got cancer and the People, the Fans took over. I know it's not going to happen, but I do dream of a revolution when the nouveau riche will be impaled on Westminster Bridge, and a Republic of Great Britain instated.
Two worlds collide at Arsenal AGM 11:52am on 23 Oct 2009 Please stop Mr Kroenke or that ghastly Mongolian warlord Usmanov from taking over an English institution. I am not an Arsenal fan, but they are part of the old order of football. An order which no longer counts the likes of Preston and Blackpool. Giants Liverpool and Manchester United have been taken over by US hedge fund locusts, and look at the mess they are in!

Sadly, the shunning of good old British values, food and industries has created an extremely superficial society in which a Neo Liberal (masquerading as Socialist)experiment has turned into a nightmare.

There is no such thing as a British car, the railways have disintegrated into a cesspit of profiteering, the Great British schooling and apprenticeship system is on its knees, not to mention the NHS (try finding someone who speaks English in a public hospital these days) and now the one unifying, sporting institution the public love has been put on the market like cattle awaiting slaughter.

When will boards realise that these foreign tycoons have absolutely no interest in the health of our game and our fans. If that means not being able to buy the best foreign talent in the world so be it. I would prefer to watch home grown talent playing honest football.

Maybe I should have been born in the 50s, and I wish I was, because this modern era of plastic junk is intolerable. So, my message to Peter Hill-Wood - don't succumb to the artificial world of tapas, blackberries and overrated French wine! Keep with the Bitter, tea and scones! It's a shame the days of Highbury and the fighting spirit of Adams, Bould and co.

I don't have much time for Wenger's pretty passing, it is pleasing on the eye, the actors, though, are very transient.

Me, I shall conentrate more on watching Rugby and Cricket - two sports which still have their integrity intact.
Benitez faces biggest test 6:53pm on 21 Oct 2009 Benitez has accused the likes of United and Chelsea for buying success, but look at the amount of money he has spent on dross, and it doesn't amount to much less than the aforementioned clubs.

Phil mentions Voronin as an example of Benitez's signings, but remember him selling Michael Owen for 8m and getting Nunez? Then there was a string of Spanish signings of which only Alonso and Torres stand out. None of these players were cheap, all on high wages. What about Kromkamp - a promising young Dutch defender who had broken into their national team, didn't even get a full season to prove himself at Anfield. I could continue with Sissoko and other players Benitez has bought for good money, only for him to sell them down the river.

When will Liverpool fans realise that Istanbul 2005 was a freak of nature and down to Lady Luck and Gerrard's belligerence. That fact they were 3-0 down at half time had a lot to do with the rambling Quixote's selection and tactics.
England cannot replace Rooney 6:52pm on 13 Oct 2009 Another one-dimensional McNulty Blog...

Look, I am as big a fan of Rooney as the next person, but to pin Englands narrow hopes on one player is ridiculous. This is becoming a mantra that has often bogged England stars down in the past.

Whilst an excellent forward, "Jimmy" as he is known by his close friends and family, is not the most prolific striker in the world, not even in the Premiership.
Secondly, despite improving his temperament, he still has a short fuse. Another source of unwanted yellow cards and niggling injuries is his exuberant style of play. Rooney plays on the edge, precisely what makes him so good. However, he does that with a risk. Take that risk element away from his game, you devalue the player. Another element of his play is to do "too much" for the team - he drops back and fights for the ball in all sorts of positions, only to not be in a goalscoring position when the chance arises. This is an indictment to his team mates at both club and country, if he can work so hard, why can't everyone else, Messrs Ferdinand, Lampard and Beckham?

On that evidence, you can actually set your stall out to frustrate, nullify and provoke Rooney. Fortunately that doesn't work most of the time - and then there is the prospect of him playing up-front on his own. Managers know he needs a second striker to be at his most effective, yet because of his enormous work rate, they still deploy the tactic.

It would be very sad if England had to rely on Rooney and his exploits and his absence would weaken the side. But we are talking about a player who didn't score for national side for nearly three years. Still, he is a great player, but no one soldier makes an army!
Ferdinand must sharpen up 08:18am on 11 Oct 2009 Good blog for once. Ferdinand has been struggling with fitness and form at United since the back end of last season. We have seen him go through these spells of poor concentration and slackness several times in his career.
He obviously has the quality to go to the world cupk, but Capello will not tolerate any passengers, so beware the likes of Beckham, Ferdinand and Cole!

It is worrying that the defence is still shaky, let's face it, England haven't exactly been tested by top-class attacking outfits. They were played off the park by Spain in February and Capello will be worried that nonchalence and lack of tactical awareness and discipline have cost England in the past. If England really are to win the World Cup, they must prepare meticulously, no WAGs, and punishment meted out to players who are not fully committed.
Uruguay face tactical dilemma 11:39am on 07 Oct 2009 oh, and Equador weren't playing at altitude when they got to the knock-out stage from a very strong group with Poland, Germany and Costa Rica. England didn't exactly cover themselves in glory in that 2. round game either. People make to much of this altitude thing, you can prepare for that nowadays anyway.
