Frail batting costs England again 09:34am on 31 Jul 2008 Do you reckon Michael Vaughan had a wink of sleep last night ?? I don't !!!

Not only did he middle one behind first balls and then decide to try and trick the umpire into saying he didn't. This golden duck will hopefully be the final nail in his test playing coffin. If rumours are true then yorkshire don't want a one legged walking wicket playing for them either. Now where to most ex england captains go out to graze.....in the media !!! With his childish respones to the perfectly reasonable questioning by Aggers he has probably scuppered any chance of a media career now too.

Pressure mounting on the England captain 4:20pm on 30 Jul 2008 I am so depressed. Today's debacle was so inevitable . The so called laymen on here have all , to a man, realised that Collingwood, Vaughan and Ambrose have to go. Period. Why oh why can't the powers that be see it ?? Substitute those 3 for Bopara, Key and Foster respectively and we have a chance. The bowlers are all ok and are being pushed by the likes of Jones, Harmy and Broad which is healthy.
The trouble is I can't find an answer to this apart from making me the England Selector !!! We need one individual who is not part of the clique to make educated judgment calls on the best eleven for England. Once that eleven has been picked purely on merit and form you can then select a captain. This won't happen though as it would be far too radical.

Yes , their batting is quality and will no doubt put up massive first innings totals but they still need to get 20 wickets to win a match. They don't have a decent spinner and in Brett Lee only have one world class fast bowler. Johnson, Clark, Bracken, Hilfenhaus et al are nothing to be scared of. We just need some fresh blood to go there without fear. Bopara, Key, Shah, Foster etc and it could be closer than you think.

He middled a ball he could and should of left and to say these comments are unfair is ridiculous. If the team was picked by "independent" selectors and was based on form and ability alone then he wouldn't of been anywhere near it for ages. Why cant he , the selectors and you see this ? As #189 says he now needs to do the right thing and walk away with some pride still left intact.

Perhaps, like a good, sensible chap he has decided to take my advice.
Pressure mounting on the England captain 12:56pm on 30 Jul 2008 We've had Nick Dougherty criticising Peter Allis in golf and now Michael Vaughan doing the same with Aggers. They should be embarrassed. Michael Vaughan can tell his story walking as far as I am concerned, he's clinging on for a slice of the millions and his best chance is to buy a lottery ticket. Time to go now, pack your bags and walk out of Edgbaston . We'd be better off with 10 fit, focused and able individuals.

Pressure mounting on the England captain 5:36pm on 29 Jul 2008 bob roth #70, you need to wake up and smell the mellow birds my friend. Slowly take off the vaughan tinted spectacles and see for yourself that he is a liability in the field, a ball chasing captain who's field placings are always a case of "after the horse has bolted" and most importantly his batting performances are poor to say the least.
You raise a query about Alastair Cook and I agree his actual form is poor and you can quote him on that too but he is able to grind scores out and sell his wicket very dearly.
Does Vaughan do this , does he heck ? He misses straight balls from Steyn early on !!!
Vaughan has previously done a decent job I agree but the foundations were already laid by Hussain and Fletcher. The next England captain (hopefully Key) will almost have to start all over again.
The sooner the later as far as I am concerned.

With Foster behind the stumps you can also get rid of Collingwood and include Bopara. The batting argument is a no-brainer and if you saw the way Bopara/Foster played in tandem last night you should agree that this would seriously give England a credible 5th bowler option whilst not hindering the batting potential. This would ruin Essex but so be it if England are to be serious players in world test cricket.
Finally bring in Rob Key as skipper and number 3 and England could seriously go places.
Pressure mounting on the England captain 2:01pm on 29 Jul 2008 Aggers you make sense my friend but you fail to make the connection that there is a ready made captain and number 3 waiting to step right into Vaughan's shoes.......Robert Key. A superb tactician and much more reliable and consistent batter. England haven't got the "balls" to do both at once but it would provide the shake up required. I am an Essex man too so am not biased at all but this seems so obvious to me.

Secondly what has Paul Collingwood done to get himself back in the line up ? All this rubbish about being the hardest worker and most patriotic doesn't make up for his obvious limitations as a test batsman.

On Wednesday , England will once again come "hopping out" eating carrots at the fall of the 4th wicket. I really can't see how we can compete at all with the side we;ve picked. I hope i'll be made to eat my words but you know where you heard it first !!
Alec Stewart's England ratings 4:39pm on 15 Jul 2008 3.5 for Ambrose is a bit generous Stewie !!! I know the draw was inevitable but the drop of Smith off of Pietersen is totally inexcusable , coupled with another inept batting display I would give him 1 for looking smart. When will England go either for the best keeper batsman (Prior) and forgive a few errors or go for the best gloveman (Foster) and excuse a few poor innings although he won;t be any worse than Read or Ambrose.

Collingwood has to go, he has always been a trier but lacks quality. IMHO Robert Key should have been batting in his spot for the past 3 years.

I am however slightly worried that with Flintoff potentially batting at 6 that we will start "hopping out" from the fall of the 4th wicket with some disastrous collapses on the agenda. Yes we'll have 5 bowlers but that;s no good trying to reply to a first innings total of 167 !!!
