I'm surprised you, as a Utd fan, don't appreciate the security and class that Rio brings to your back line. Fair enough, he isn't going through the greatest period of form right now but, when on form, he is one the top 3 or 4 CBs in world football (behind Nesta, Lucio, Canna and Puyol).

Vidic and Terry are 2 lumbering brutes who can't deal with mobile strikers or anyone who can trouble them physically. I have seen both struggle against the likes of Torres, Drogba, Yakubu, Rodallega, Eto'o, Kenwyne Jones etc...

Typical England apologist stuff from Robbo. You're just like every other plastic journo/presenter working for the Beeb - gutless. You might want to re-think your 'I call a spade a spade' argument.

How is the situation any different from Tevez'? Please elaborate, Robbo. Tevez at least WANTED to stay at MU, whereas Owen couldn't wait to get shot of Liverpool (not to mention his treatment of Newcastle).

And you want fans to cut him some slack...?

And I wouldn't regard comparisons with Terry as too big a compliment. The man is so overrated it's embarrassing. But I suppose that's par for the course when you're England captain.

On a side note, England will get found out in S Africa if Rio doesn't cut out the mistakes. For too long he has had to carry Terry (and Vidic/Evans at club level), and if RIO can't be relied upon then what hope do England have.

Pelase stop, I haven't laughed so hard in years!!! Are we going back to the early days of Rooney's career when he was being comapred to Pele, Maradona and Cruyff? As for Gerrard and Lampard being the best CMs in the world; I believe one of them plays on the left for England because he couldn't 'co-exist' with other.

Kaka-Melo-Gilberto is about as good as it gets, my friend. Even Xavi & Iniesta are streets ahead of you're precious centre-mids.

As for CBs: Lucio-Juan are stronger than Ferdinand + the vastly overrated Terry. Heck, Brazil have Luisao, Thiago Silva and Alex in reserve.

Admittedly, I misquoted Robbo - but you still got the gist of it, I assume. And to say it was a 'compliment' is wrong - it's only a compliment when it's not shrouded in criticism.

I feel annoyed by quotes such as '...the least popular World Cup win in history'. Maybe he forgets how we thrashed Ukraine and matched Australia after having a man sent off. Or how we were involved in arguably the best World Cup tie for years (against the hosts). The fact of the matter is, the British media refuse to give credit where it's due whenever it concerns Italy.

Yes, Grosso dived against Australia but was that as bad as Crouch using the Trinidadian defender's hair as leverage when scoring against them? Why do we never hear about that?

Far from getting my knickers in a twist, I responded in kind with something English fans don't like to hear; namely, the fact that they've hardly set the world alight with their own brand of football.
Fed-exceptional 4:34pm on 08 Jun 2009 Italians are 'dull and defensive', you say? I could have sworn you were talking about England, who made a routine 4-0 victory over (the mighty) Kazakhstan look like hard work. Come back when an England side can string three meaningful passes together...

I also suggest you watch some re-runs of Barcelona's recent Champions League games and ask yourself which part of Italy do Man Utd and Chelsea hail from.

You said in an earlier post (#103): "For years, Italian teams were rightly applauded for their tactical knowhow and defensive stability. They are historically known for being defensive masters".

When have Italian sides ever been applauded? Ask your average English football fan their opinion on the Italians' 'defensive mastery' and counter-attacking style, the typical response would be, 'Oh, Italian sides, they're slow & boring' and, 'I can't watch Serie a, it's a snoozefest' etc...

English football needs to get off it's high-horse and accept the flak sometimes. Last night being one of those occasions.

Can anyone remember all the criticism Italy endured because of how we played against Spain at Euro 2008?

Sheer hypocrisy.

And, yes, I agree with an earlier post; David Pleat's 'tactical insight' leaves a lot to be desired.

But, no. Since it was an English side who were holding on for dear life, it's labeled as 'resilient', 'brave' and even 'encouraging'.

The fact of the matter is; two English sides have gone to Camp Nou in the last 12 months and neither had any intention of bagging that away goal. The possession figures reveal all you need to know. Tellingly, both Man Utd and Chelsea's best opportunities were borne from Barcelona errors - Ronaldo's missed penalty, Scholes' goal from a misplaced Barca pass, and Drogba's one-on-one with Valdes after Marquez' shoddy back-pass.

For a league that champions adventure and industry, these attributes were conspicuous only through their absence. For two seasons running.
Review of the week 2:36pm on 23 Apr 2009 It has been clear for a long time that Fergie, whilst not entirely immune, is subjected to far less criticism than Benitez for very similar actions. Some may argue that it's a mild form of xenophobia but, if you recall, Mourinho was afforded the same treatment during his tenure. So it's more a case of favouritism than anything else.

And this shows in their correspondence. (I'm not accusing you here, Chris!)
