That was horrid, Henry 3:53pm on 19 Nov 2009 Another sad day for football and sport generally. This isn't limited to football of course, we've had everything from the now standard drug abuse to deliberate crashes and fake injuries in other sports.

Sorry to be so negative, but there's little you can do to stop the momentum of change, and the comments on this blog show how many people already view cheating as a standard element of a 'sporting' contest. For those of you saying Henry (that's the multi-millionaire Henry with a first class ticket to South Africa to play in the biggest football tournament in the world) is going to be forever gutted by the tarnish of his reputation - sorry, but you're kidding yourselves.

Money got us into this mess, and ironically it may be money that gets us out again. If cheating gets to such a level that viewers start to turn off and stop watching so much sport, the income goes away and the incentive to cheat goes away with it. But I can't see it happening anytime soon.
Not so Big Four 4:12pm on 19 Oct 2009 I think there has been a drop in quality of the big teams this season, although I think they may still do enough to be occupying the top 4 places come the end of the season. Chelsea look strongest overall but are aging, Man U can still turn it on intermittently but look a different team without Rooney, Arsenal have surprised a few people but still not quite the finished article, Liverpool obviously in the most danger of slipping back.

They might be the top 4 in the Premier League come the end of the season but I would stick my neck out and predict no English team will be in the Champions League final this year.
Review of the week 4:19pm on 16 Oct 2009 I was sat on the sofa confused as to why England were bringing Abraham Lincoln on as a substitute. Interesting, I thought to myself, but surely he'd be better in the air if he kept his hat on. Maybe I should stop drinking whilst watching football...

Chris, the last sentence of comment 16 might just about be the best thing ever written on a BBC blog.
Man City challenge is no fake 10:37am on 06 Oct 2009 Have to agree with a lot of the comments above. There seem to be at least six teams tipped to finish in the top four this season which clearly isn't going to happen. I think City will come close this time, but I think the familiar top 4 will be in place come the end of the season. It does look like being a far more interesting season though, I think it will be a close finish and whoever finishes top of the league will have less points than in previous years. The reality is that if City really have top 4 ambitions, last night's game is precisely the sort they need to be winning.

On a different note, am I the only one who doesn't agree with not celebrating goals against teams you used to play for? Winding up the opposition fans is clearly out of order and shouldn't be done, but you should always be delighted to score for the team you play for, regardless of opposition. To not celebrate with your own team mates when you score a goal at home is a bit odd if you ask me - we've gone from one extreme to the other.

Personally I wish they would do more to keep these blogs on topic. The usual frustration with the moderation here is that it often takes ages but then lets everything through anyway.

Anyway I enjoyed this one Phil, it's really interesting how the last couple of games involving Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs and Man City have returned the table to a more familiar sight. If these results had gone the other way the rest of season may have panned out very differently to how it now looks to be shaping up. A long way to go, yes, but the new challengers have lost some momentum and I suspect these recent results may end up being crucial to their top 4 ambitions.

Most impressive player so far this season for me (and I speak as a non-Chelsea supporter) is Drogba. He just seems to be doing everything right, and there's no sign of the petulent shennanigans we've come to expect.
Champions League? You're having a laugh 3:49pm on 18 Sep 2009 The problem is that the benefit to the smaller teams isn't sustainable in the medium term. Getting the smaller teams in to broaden the competition and share some of the financial windfall is all very well but has undoubtedly reduced the overall quality of this year's contest.

More matches with foregone conclusions will ultimately result in less interest, smaller crowds, smaller TV audiences, less advertising revenue, which means the rights aren't worth as much to Sky etc etc. The majority of people want to watch the 32 best clubs in Europe going toe to toe. Reduce the quality of the competition and the income it generates will reduce as well.

Review of the week 4:06pm on 07 Sep 2009 Let's be honest, it wasn't just the result of the Champions League draw that was a bit dull, the draw itself was possibly the least exciting thing to appear on television since the test card was abandoned. How on earth do they manage to string it out for so long? I found myself pleading with the telly, "for the love of Pete, please just draw another ball". That's a piece of coverage the BBC should be happy not to have.

I'm not sure that he could have made it any clearer that he still has an open mind as to the final selection.
Best moments of Berlin 2:39pm on 24 Aug 2009 Fantastic championships. Memorable for so many reasons, which are very well covered by your list Tom.

I agree with #31 that someone needs to give the BBC commentary team a poke with the 'happy stick' though. It wasn't just sniffiness about Berlino either, there was moaning about the course for the walk and marathon, criticising the local director when he dared to lack the telepathy needed to show the shots they wanted to talk about etc etc. The studio is the place to discuss the wider issues of the championships, I'd rather the event commentators focused on describing the action instead of continual unsolicited (and predominantly negative) opinions.

To finish on a positive note though, Michael Johnson is the best pundit on any sport for my money. A real coup for the BBC, and great to hear he is signed up for 2012.
