Another Black Friday 1:19pm on 13 Dec 2008 The costs inherent in building a car in the UK, Europe and and the US - costs that not only have to include salaries/pay packets, but other substantial benefits - make them difficult financial propositions for those that seek to purchase a car; and the main factor behind the car industries previous success was the ability of consumers to be able to draw on credit in order for any purchase to be possible...

The markets thrived because of the availability of credit...you take that away and you have no market...

This is not just the case with cars - you have houses, and other purchase-ables...

Fort too long, most of us were led to believe that the prices of things as they stood - cars, houses/homes, etc - and the increases we have been observing - were part of a natural trend, when in fact these were 'artificially' maintained and propped up by the availability of credit, particularly where it should not have been made available...

What we learn today is that the world has been functioning on flawed economics; on false premises...

This financial situation was inevitable and would have come at some point or other; the variables, factors, opportunities and circumstances would present themselves at some point and the march for profit, growth, status etc would take us down this road...

Brown's previous proclamations that 'Boom 'n' Bust' are over are in fact now laughable - and though he tries with every opportunity to direct the blame to the US, he was still fundamentally wrong; the fact that he is not able to own up to this is severely poor quality.

However, the US with its arrogance - particularly and Bush's total lack of appreciation for what is required to macro-manage an economy, amongst many things etc - is what really takes the soggy biscuit...Bush, Paulsen and Bernanke, the three stooges, have really led their people and the world back into the primordial crud...

So what are we left with? And what is to happen? Who know?!

What worries is that society itself has, it would appear, become unsustainable...
Dramatic athletics - but Britain beware 12:40pm on 24 Aug 2008 How can we have won the gold we were expecting when it wasn't in the event we had figured we would get it?!

I'm hoping this is a slightly veiled rebuke of the structure, systems and managers, experts and coaches in place...

BBC and its commentators and pundits have been too kind to UK Athletics...bordering on serving as its mouth-piece...as have others suggested too...

I've been arguing the same...there is no strength in depth...it is hard to see where, in some of the events, there are others following in very closely behind the 0single notable athlete we have ( if we even have one that is).

Dave Collins cannot pull the wool over my eyes - don't know about anyone else...'stretched targets' and 'no stone unturned' etc...these statements, some of them cliches to the extreme, do not fill me with confidence...and rather suggest to me the he is covering his Glutias Maximus...

The five medal target was always poor and was reduced from a figure of 12 or 13 at the very beginning...

Getting four medals instead five is a poor show...80% of an already low target, one set in order to allow for maximum opportunity to achieve the set target and to repel criticism, does not give me a sense of achievement...

The tone of the article suggests that you are disappointed but cannot be so forthright with your opinions and feelings...

The gold was unexpected - had it no tbeen for Ohorugu's efforts things would have looked even more stark...the high jump silver too unexpected, and from someone only recently qualifying to represent Britain...

Thankfully, there have been performances to provide hope for the future...Kwakye in the hundred, Goldie Sayers, Rooney and Steele, Dobriskey is a real hope...of course the 400m girls...but there are many events in which we are figuring...

Let's be honest and open - progress depends upon it...

He helped take us from the realms of postulation, hoping and dreaming, into a world of the real, present and now...no need to wonder anymore, other than to think about how fast he can go...

For as long as he is running, and is fit, everyone else is running for silver...he's out on his own...

As to how fast he can go...

Well there's two ways of looking at it...how fast could he have gone in the 100m final he won...

And how fast can he go in the future...

If he had ran to the line, he would have gone to the very low 9.6s...and that would've been with nil following wind...

In the future, if he improves and grows stronger as he should, staying injury and fit along the way, and if he runs to the line, and if wind conditions are favourable...9.50 is possible...may be even lower...

The question is, how much does he care about it? If he does care about it, he will set a time that will last for half a century...

That is what we want to see; to see what is humanly possible...more than any other, he has the potential to give us what we are craving...

You only need to look at Michael Johnson's and Donovan Bailey's interviews on Bolt since that performance to see how some of the greats are already viewing the man...

Thompson ran 9.69...Gay ran a wind-assisted 9.68 earlier this year at the American Trials...( his legal PB 9.77 )...

Gay now has the fastest ever time recorded for the 100m - ( taking into account all times produced for the distance regardless of circumstances )...

Although would have loved for it be 9.59secs!!!
Radcliffe ready for action 10:20am on 05 Aug 2008 Regarding the Radcliffe episode leading into the Olympics - have observed a lot of hate-orientated commentary from posters on such threads...

Yes - people have a right to have an opinion, but to dislike her with such venom...not sure what that is all about...

What she does or has done has no tangible bearing on most people's lives ( other than fill us with joy or despair; but she has not deliberately set out to harm anyone ) - the Olympics come round once every four years - they last two weeks and then they're gone...yes, we tune in the in the vane hope that a Brit will do us proud...and if they do, fantastic, if they don't, then it should the case that there is a lot more in your - our - immediate world to get worked up about...

There are people out there that are more worthy of our scorn...

Let's get some perspective...

Is seems Mr Barra doesn't see Mr Idowu's chances as that great...though of course, he was basing his predictions on past outcomes - and Idowu, until recently, just hadn't figured...( that's another medal then to add to the list )...

On a more serious note - not sure how I feel about the strong links between politics and sport...

Is it healthy? Is it healthy to have the sporting bodies and the sporting fraternity in general to have to answer to politicians, more precisely, to the political establishment? ( May be not directly - but certainly as a result of and through the funding mechanisms and structures in place...)

May be its just something that has to be accepted - where lottery money is concerned, there has to be some degree of accountability...

But mixing sport and politics seems sinister to me!!!

Olympic ideals survive Chambers challenge 11:51am on 22 Jul 2008 It is looking increasingly possible that he by-law will eventually be overturned - and if it is, Dwain may still get a second chance as he may be around for 2012...

For me, the most unfortunate side of this debate has been the hidden prejudice that has been underpinned the comments of some of the posters...not all, but a few...

There has been a great discussion about where the greater moral position lies in this debate - a very healthy discussion to have - but problematically, there has also been some quite difficult, nasty, and effectively irrational rantings aginst dwain that do nothing other than suggest that the main motivations behind their posts have been to register their outright dislike of the man...beyond any rational debating...and exemplified by the venomous outpourings with respect to Dwain and his supporters on such forums...

Whilst this issue has nothing to do with the race card, some have made it so...
Rutherford's heroics and the 100m showdown 10:46pm on 14 Jul 2008 Dwain should be allowed to run...

There is a lot more to be gained by that than if he was prevented from representing Britain...

Have posted elsewhere, that, in this one example, we can observe the degree to which UK Athletics takes the issue of using banned substance seriously, and in this one example, we can observe the fallout from being found out, the negative impact it would have on athletes chosen career path and that athletes ability to make a sustainable living from their chosen career if the do transgress and get found out...and if he is allowed to run, we also observe how that same athlete can redeem himself without the aid of banned substance...that they could have made it regardless...that double example is a powerful one...for both himself and for others, particularly, other young athletes...

The BBC have, unfortunately, shot themselves in the foot a little with this one...I watched the televised trials...what little there was, and they served to drag the whole trials down with their negativity and their lop-sided, biased commentary...was really sad to watch...

Mr Cram - I know you care about these issues, the vast majority of people do, that includes Dwain Chambers' fans...of which I have become one...and believe me, it took me some time to get to like him again...but you do yourself, the BBC and the public no favours continuing as you have...

I suspect given the backlash post-trials that is there for all to see, it probably has made you and others a little more self-reflective...at least, I hope it has...

Here's to a top Beijing Olympics - with all our best athletes out there...
Germany the big winners in last act drama 10:31am on 21 Jun 2008 Could many peoples' belief that Turkey will be done over by Germany be more a reflection of their desire to Turkey fall at the next hurdle than an exercise in predicting outcomes based on impartiality?!
