Polls apart? 10:33am on 30 Oct 2009 For me the great unanswered question is. Who the heck are the 1% who think defence and foreign affairs should be in the hands of local government???!!! They can't even empty the bins properly mun!
On your marks 12:50pm on 30 Sep 2009 As long as Rhodri's successor has the vision, will, and ability to take us forward it doesn't matter who they are.
The sooner we move away from the current farcial situation. Today again we read about proposals to restrict inappropriate use of sunbeds. Great. Unfortunately we also read that a request will be made to Westminster etc etc.
WHY?! Being middle aged I don't have to ask my mother if I am allowed to decide what car I drive, what job I do, where I live etc. When are we the Welsh people going to be treated as the intelligent and able adults that we are and be able to make our own decisions in life and make them when we want not when we're told we are resonsible enough and have permission?
Look at the smoking ban. We had to wait for Westminster. How many Welsh lives did that delay cause? How much unnneccessary financial burden did that delay place on our Health Service?
Ideas for Autumnwatch 1:11pm on 12 Jun 2009 Drop Chris Packham, drop Kate Humble, keep to two weeks. Bring back Bill Oddie have a radical approach bring in ace-twitcher Lee GR Evans.
Focus only on rare birds.

Obviously that just panders to my prejudices but how about a take on star in a reasonably priced car from Top Gear. Get a celebrity to go and look at wildlife with particular focus on younger people to get them interested so I'm thinking soap actors, pop stars, sports stars etc.

I happen to think that my fellow Welshmen are intelligent and able people who are more than able to make decisions for themselves and find solutions for their specific problems themselves.
Why is that there are so many people living in Wales who think so little of the abilities, skills, and intellegience of themselves and their fellow Welshmen/women that they feel we can't run our own affairs?
Do thes people ever leave home? Or do they still rely on their parents to buy their clothes, and food and wipe their noses for them.
The current system is a shambles. Why the heck do we need approval for making decisions.
2 years , 2 YEARS! we waited for a smoking ban because unlike Scotland we couldn't legislate but had to wait for the English to get their act together. How many lives lost?

Believe in yourselves people. Cut the apron strings and soar.
Springwatch 2009 - new presenter team announced 12:53pm on 30 Mar 2009 I am very disappointed with the appointment of Chris Packham. Bill oddie was a field naturalist first who became a presenter. I have a feeling that Chris Packham is a career TV presenter feigning an interest in wildlife to further his career.

More alarming to me is the fact that he, like Kate, is a dog walker/lover. The anithesis of wildlife watchers/lovers.
It would be good to hear the BBC confirm that Springwatch which is watched and loved by millions will not move from the wonderful wildlife programme that it is to a "walks with your dogs" vehicle and that there will be no items of that nature featured. Dogs should be discouraged from the countryside.
It's a No. 1:01pm on 29 Sep 2008 I get very confused with the comments on here. How does granting full law making powers in the style of Scotland equate to Independence? Why does letting our elected representatives decide on a way forward for Wales mean a Balkan style crisis and Soviet style poverty?
As I see it there are two inescapable facts from a number of surveys. 1) only around 10% of Welsh voters want independence and 2) The vast majority want to retain the Assembly with a majority of those want an increase in it's powers.
Surely then it is to our benefit to make the Assembly work and that means increasing its ability to legislate effectively and smoothly in accordance with the peoples wishes and that means removing the obstacles and need for parliamentary approval before acting. Why are we wasting time and on occasion lives (smoking ban time lags).
Just why is it that the no campaigners don't want more powers? Do they really feel that we as a country don't have the people with the abilities to govern ourselves? Are they really that patronising and doubtful of the talents of their fellow Welshmen?
And why the spectre of Independence? Independence at present is a pipe dream. It may come one day or it may not. But it certainly wont come in my lifetime. Why all the rubbish about convoys of people heading east. Absolute poppycock! If there were independence we would still be on the same island as England and Scotland. We would still have families in each others countries, share many common values and experience. Share the same language, similar cultures and beliefs, and they would be our major trading partners. There are diffrences of course there are but not the sharp ethnic and religious ones that damage relations in the Balkans. In short independence would not be the armageddon that the no brigade paints. But we are/or should not be discussing independence we are discussing law making powers.
At the moment we have four countries in the UK with four different systems of government. It is a total mess! Anyone wanting to save the Union should grasp the reality that devolution can't be reversed but that the Union can be saved by having the same system in place in all 4 countries which mirrors the Scottish Parliament.
Holding on to the current position is untenable because the English are getting increasingly disgruntled with it and it is they who will at that rate drive through Welsh indepenendence by default if nothing is done.
Will they, won't they? 4:56pm on 25 Jul 2008 Congratulations to the SNP. I would like to address the criticism of Alex Salmond in referring to London Labour. His reference is correct. New Labour is about courting the English (largely southern) Middle Classes.
They have taken, and continue to take, for granted their core voters who (used to) vote for them unquestioningly and en masse whether they were in Glasgow or Rhondda (or even Rotherham).
The SNP is right for Scotland in delivering what its people need. In an ideal world they'll bring those in Labour who still care about their people to their senses and work for the greater good. But in the meantime they are driving Scotland on just as Plaid have kicked Labour in coalition into line and back to delivering for the people of Wales in line with good old fashioned socialist values.
Look this way 12:22pm on 15 Jul 2008 Whether I like it or not the Conservatives are a racing certainty to win the next General Election.
Whether they like it or not the Conservatives are going to address the current legislative shambles.
We have four very different systems operating now in the four UK countries in terms of decision making.
I am Welsh, but in respect of this issue I am English. This is because I live in England and use the English NHS, my children use the English education system etc. Decisions in these spheres are taken at Westminster where representatives from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland vote on these issues with no resulting effect on their constituents.
The position in England is untenable. The position in the UK is untenable. If you look at the list of laws proposed in a Queens Speech you will see a) applies to the UK, or b) Applies to England, Wales and Scotland or c) Applies to England, Wales, and N Ireland or d) Applies to England and Wales or e) Applies to England only. A right mish-mash
The position can only be rectified if we are all treated the same. Will the Scots accept a Welsh Style Assembly? No! Will they abolish their elected body? No. Then we have to have 4 legislative bodies with equal (law making) powers.
For those that cherish the Union it may be the only way they can save it.

As for Labour out of power not being able to legislate for a referendum or law making. Personally I think another dose of Tories will make them see sense and also make the people of Wales see sense and determine their/our destiny (I am coming back!) and lifestyle.
