Suggest a story 5:38pm on 11 Apr 2009 If our ideas for polling don't have to be serious, what is the point of wasting time and licence payers money on it. Wouldn't it be much better to use the resource to poll the nation on something which causes concern such as Government spending on adverts, or fluoridation of drinking water. Its not as if there is a shortage of serious topics is it ?

Reporting demos, and all that Jazz. 5:54pm on 01 Apr 2009 Its not just peaceful demos that are ignored by the media and little wonder that the BBC is often thought to be a mere mouthpiece of the Government. As a veteren campaigner with Friends of the Earth, i have witnessed a decline in coverage, much of it due to reduction in staff and reporters and the complications of coverage since the Kelly affair.

More alarming still, when the government acts illegally its now apparently taken for granted and duly ignored. For example as a campaigner against the unscientific, medically unproved and dangerous process of compulsoray medication of the public with fluoride via the water supply, the government set up a "consultation"process to gauge public opinion, between 72 and 92% said bugger off we dont want it in Southampton, the NHS simply ignored this and decided to fluoridate the water in that city. Its illegal, unethical and seriously damaging to democracy. How can this happen without a major uproar in the press and media. Apparently it can if the people who control the media are linked with the people who make the toxic waste that fluoride is. Its no use being a nice well brought up and well behaved objector when the poisoners simply dont play by the same rules and can place themselves above the law. Like it or not this is storing up anger and resentment for the future. Little wonder that the authorities take every opportunity to increase CCTV cams and police powers. They are creating the problems which they claim are the work of hooligans.
Light bulbs! 9:52pm on 08 Jan 2009 Low energy light bulbs are full of deadly mercury which is "special waste." This muck in discarded low energy light bulbs is now being released all over the country when discarded light bulbs in our waste bins, are crushed by the council waste collectors trucks in our streets. As usual, the government goes for a quick techno fix which it simply does not understand. Most local authorities dont have the facilities to safely collect and store these bulbs although the Environment Agency rules state that they should all be recycled in closed loop facilities to stop contamination. Another point to consider, how much more raw materials and energy is required to manufacture so called low energy bulbs? We as usualy have a government of idiots who would be even more dangerous than they are if they had a brain. Why do we vote for them i wonder?
David Davis resigns as an MP. 5:30pm on 12 Jun 2008 Well Done David Davies, I was beginning to think that people had forgotten about the appalling paranoia of this government. They are doing more damage than the terrorists and not only making us hated by foreign countries but also treating us all like criminals or suspects in our own country. Its time that this awful bunch of morons we call a government was first of all reminded that they elected to serve, and not elected to bully or bomb people and then given the push. We cannot set a good example in the world if we have a government like this which apparently measures all of us by their own corrupt and dishonest standards. Thank you Mr Davies for restoring some of my faith in the basic decency of human nature.

I have worked with a multitude of people and organisations including my MP over many years, to get Cannabis recognised as a valuable medicine and Hemp as an incredibly valuable multi purpose plant. I am frankly appalled to see Gordon Brown ignoring his own experts advice once again, as he did with the York Review and fluoride.

All drug related problems must be looked at purely from a health standpoint and must not be used as political football by politicians who clearly do not comprehend the issues and resort to emotional blackmail to get their own way. Only some types of Skunk with very high THC and low cannabinol levels present any real dangers and those very small in number. Most cannabis is benign as i and my generation know from many years recreational use.

The war against drugs was lost many thousands of years ago and Brown is demonstrating a lack of historical perspective and vision and showing himself not fit for purpose if he thinks that prohibition will ever work. Until he wakes up to these realities, his reign of error will continue.

Movable Type Comments 6:18pm on 05 Feb 2008 Fluoride is one of the biggest and most disgraceful cons ever perpetrated on citizens. Beloved by Hitler and Stalin, because it kept prisoners in the camps quiet it was never really subected to any proper testing. Rather than protect teeth, it actually damages them by causing dental fluorosis. Dentists dont provide treatment for fluorosis on the NHS of course but can make a nice living out of very expensive private treatment. Its not a medicine at all but its certainly a poison. Fluoride is also linked with many other serious medical problems including altzheimers disease, low IQ in Children, Thyroid disorders, obesity and even osteo sarcoma.

The governement commisioned the York Review but then decided that because the review could not find any evidence good enough to recommend it and advised against further expansion, they would ignored the findings.

Its little wonder that its not safe safe. its actually produced as toxic waste from the aluminium, ceramics and pesticides industry. Its very good for killing rats and cockroaches if you have them but if ever a truck carrying this stuff has an accident, run away as fast as possible and let the men in space suits come and clean it away if they can. So safe is fluoride that the Government have given the water companies immunity from prosecution if there is an accident.

Many millions of pounds have been wasted by the government in promoting this and in paying allegedly independent researchers, but even they have found little to recommend it whilst at the same time continually failing to mention any of the already existing negative evidence. Additional expense in providing trucks and updating infrastructure will probably fall eventually on the Council Tax because the NHS budget is exausted already. The whole campaign to add this is based on old and now discredited pseudo science and speculation and is seen by the government as a way out of paying for proper dental practice and oral hygiene education.

Comparing fluoridated Birmingham with unfluoridated areas is completely bogus when Birmingham has also much spent on it for other dental measure. Scientific it is not. Its also unethical and illegal, but of course when has a trifle like that ever disuaded this government from stupid policies and control freakery. We have spent many millions on making our drinking water clean, but now we must have toxic waste in it must we. Ididnt vote for this and i certainly wont pay for it.
Nuclear. 7:52pm on 10 Jan 2008 As a confirmed cynic, I am beginning to wonder whether the cost of other fuels and particularly energy in the form of gas and electricity, are being artificially increased in order to justify building new nuke plants. If the price of home energy continues to double every 18 months, Nukes will increasingly seem like a cheap option. However, money isnt eerything unless you are in Government of course, and Uranium is not widely available here and world supplies are time limited. Safe methods and sites for disposal are also not to hand and we cannot return to increased dumping of the immortal waste either into or beneath the Irish Sea. Storing the crap, (and lets face it, it is crap,) is not a safe option in a dangerous world full of insane terrorists and apparently equally insane Governments. All they have to do is drop another plane or missile on the storage facility and its good bye to Western Europe as a viable healthy habitat, probably for ever. Becasue we have placed all our eggs in one basket, oil is quickly being exhausted and unfortunately there is not another single option to hand which will supply all our needs sustainably. Only a basket of alternatives, such as solar, waste to heat, biomass, sea bed turbines etc will do the trick and whilst we all sit and argue or twiddle our thumbs in denial, much of the energy we already use is wasted and innefficient. Perhaps we can make a start on improving public lighting, 60% of which is currently illuminating outer space.
