The new Adam Gilchrist? 1:13pm on 01 Jul 2009 I'm a big fan of art of wicket-keeping, and am generally in favour of picking your best 'keeper and asking the batsmen to get you runs. (Jack Russell was my hero as a kid :) )

I have to say, though that windradical has it spot on, in my opinion. Anyone who would like to see Foster in the Test side (and I include myself in that) has to answer whether they prefer Foster batting at 6 or playing four bowlers. To me, neither is acceptable.

Prior's not the greatest 'keeper, sure, but sometimes folk talk as if he's a bad 'keeper, which he just isn't. Even on pure 'keeping ability there are only a small handful of English-qualified guys I'd rank above him. And at 4 down for not-very-much, or, e.g., needing to accelerate towards a declaration, I think he wins or saves you a game once per series.

In the presence of a genuine all-rounder, à la Kallis or perhaps Afridi or someone (which I don't think Fred can be relied upon to be any more), I'd play Foster, or Read. Otherwise, Prior's the man for me.

T20 Tizzy 4:08pm on 17 Jun 2009 Twenty20 is great entertainment, but it's not real cricket. Anyone can beat anyone, as has been remarked, which I think rather proves both of those points. It has it's place, and if the comments here are anything to go by, it'll keep that place. Good :) This tournament has been great fun.

The Ricky Ponting/George W. comparison is absolute genius. Pointing will go down as one of the all-time great batsmen, no doubt, and deservedly so, but her really does have an air of "the terrorists never stop thinking of ways to harm our country - and neither do we!" about him.

@Footnotes - I think the point is that his elbow is straight and his hand is above his shoulder at the point of delivery - that's all the laws of the game specify. I don't think it will become a trend though - how on earth he manages the level of accuracy that he does with an action like that is beyond me! He's a one-off, and it's good for the game in my opinion.

England left to absorb shocking defeat 10:12am on 06 Jun 2009 I'm with Rupert - this was a less-than-astute performance from England, for sure, but as all the commentators have (rightly) been saying in the build up to this tournament, Twenty20 is a bit of a lottery, and any team can beat any other on a given day. Technique and skill are not usually the deciding factor. I don't think we expected to see such dramatic proof of that in the first game, but that's all it was - proof that Twenty20 is great entertainment, but not great cricket, and that the better side does not always win.

Broad's last over was excellently *bowled*, btw, it was just the other bits that went astray..!

mostly agree, although i personally think there is a case that Symonds doesn't make the starting XI, and if he's not in your first team, is he a guy you want in your squad? well, yeah, probably, but it's a consideration. he's also knocking on a bit, and is not a forward-thinking selection in that respect.

in the final analysis, though, I think gregfs23 has summed it up best: "in a five test series [Symonds] will win you one by himself", and, as an England fan, i know i'd rather be facing an Australia team without him.

i also think that Hodge arguably is the most unlucky man to miss out, but, as you say, i won't be surprised if he gets called up at some point in the series.
Windies batsmen get first taste of Onions 02:57am on 08 May 2009 Very pleased with Onions (and Swanny and Ravi too, of course), and cautiously optimistic about the future of the England cricket team, for the first time in a while!

Plus this is Oliver Brett's best piece for ages, so lots of reasons to smile!

Foster key for new-look Twenty20 squad 02:04am on 02 May 2009 I'm pleased to see a creative squad has been selected. In fact, I haven't seen such an interesting squad for ages. Foster deserves his shot, and we'll all look forwards to seeing how well he does.

@just_henners: that's a great typo!

@oliver: Ian Bell is either "surplus to requirements" or "superfluous" - you choose. He can't be "superfluous to requirements", sorry.
